USRC Harriet Lane Model Shipways 1:96 scale circa 1863

Thank you, Pete! I'm still noodling the configuration. I'm thinking about how the anchors were secured to the hull tightly enough to prevent banging and chafing and possibly dangerously damaging the hull. This drawing from zu Mondfeld looks like a good solution using the example of the first anchor. I like the solution for the second anchor, but the fore chains on Harriet Lane are pretty far aft and there would be a long section of anchor chain slapping the hull if the anchors were stowed in the chains. I'll work on a drawing and see what it looks like in 2 dimensions.View attachment 411871
I have the anchors secured the way I do because there were bollards on the deck to secure them as on clipper ships. There would have been a removable fish tackle to hoist and manage them that I did not include. How they were handled managed is still something of a mystery to me.

Another contemporary era photo has the bulwark and railing dropping open as a single piece, hinged along the bottom of the bulwark as a port for the big swivel foredeck Dahlgren.. Very awkward and cumbersome looking!

The solution you came up with makes great sense to me Pete. I'm struggling with how the sailors would manage the anchors in a space as confined as the 4 - 4.5 scale feet I have given them.

Agreed! I think I will follow your example of having only one side with an open port.

Good evening, shipmates! The smoking lamp it lit throughout the ship . . . .

Just want you to know that I probably won't post more 'til the weekend. It's finals time at my school and I have a lot of grading to do. Trying to turn over a new leaf and do it before the day the grades are due to the registrar.;)

But don't worry, I've been pushing things forward.

Cheers!

As you know, I have been concerned about adding a deck forward to mount the 30lbr Parrott. I posted the design based on Pete Gutterman (hero!) and was going forward despite my discomfort with changing the sight lines of the upper bulwarks when viewed from the side. Instead of just charging forward, I used full sized copies of the plans to see if I could balance her visually.

Below are three options relating to moving the ships boat or adding an additional boat to improve the balance. I drew the red line to help the eye follow the line level from the height of the fairlead forward aft.HL Profile Option 1A.jpgHL profile Option 1.jpgHL profile C 2 boats.jpg

Here are a couple of photos to show the progress. Keep in mind, that nothing is attached to the hull yet - even the rudder is just hanging there ;)

I am building all of the major parts first to make sure that my modifications work in harmony - in other words, I'd rather not have to remove the paddle wheel assemblies with a saw because of some unforeseen problem when I changed the deck thickness from 1/32 to 1/16 thickness.

In post #6 I showed pictures of the 1/32" sheet to be used for the deck. I was thinking to use it as a false deck and plank over it, but I got to thinking that if I'm committed to increasing the deck height by 1/32" why not just plank with 1/16" strips! That is my current plan!

Here's a mock up of the foredeck for the Parrott gun. I took some heavy artist paper as the false deck and glued 1/32" strips to that and let it set up under heavy glass so that it dried more or less flat. I'll use 1/16" thick stock for framing underneath to make the structure a bit more rigid and to supply the beams that the tiny shipwrights used to support the deck ;)

If they were different it might add interest. But beware taking away from the paddle wheel...
I don't think it will take away from the paddle wheel. The kit locates the boats (one port one starboard) close to the paddle wheel as shown in the first photo. I am slightly torn between one boat farther aft as shown in the second photo and two boats. What do you mean by different? Colors? Length? Both?

I was thinking more in terms of length - but I guess any differences would make it a talking point...
