USS Arizona Memorial model - Revell 1/426 USS Arizona, Shapeways Memorial - by SigEp Ziggy

Yes David, I want to fix the hull on all but the wreck, because of the mud. I need to clarify that I did not find the Fine Scale Modeler post until I posted here. I would like to see if ScaleModelGuy can help me. Sadly, Shapeways went out of business!

you might have to register on his site as i don't think you can do it thru finecale model site as that site is totally screwed up. happy new years.

Thanks David, you are correct about FSM, I've always had trouble with them (too many pop-ups), Scalemodelguy.com is not taking posts or registrations. I was hoping you knew how to get ahold of him, oh well. I was going to suggest working with Model Monkey on a conversion kit to a 1920's Arizona.

I did get another Revell kit at Hobby Lobby for $15. I could work on one of the ones I have already started, duh!

Well, my 2025 goal is to finish my 'Maverick F-14 Tomcat', Monogram 'Duesenberg', Revell 'Titanic' wreck bow section, and at least one Revell Arizona!

i don't think that Model Monkey can help you with that cagemast as i asked him about it over a year plus ago about it. he said that his 3d printers could not do those masts at that scale but maybe things have changed so can't hurt to ask & maybe he knows who could do them if he can't.
with regards to popups on FSM, i don't have that issue as i mostly use ie11 but also use google chrome on other sites that don't like ie11.
what is the smallest od plastic rod you can get as maybe can make a cagemast out of that rod?

I've also been itching to build the USS Arizona as she looked before she was modernized and I've 3D printed cage masts in larger scales. I've been thinking about buying the Banner 1:350 kit for my project but, I think my newest resin printer may able to make something usable for the Revell kit. It seems you've got some other things in the work queue and that's good because I'll need some time to find my code and adjust it.

I spent about 5 hours on this last night : refactored my code for USS Mississippi and Tennessee then used the C&R drawings from NARA to virtually reconstruct the aft cage mast's hyperboloid lattice for the Pennsylvania class. Scaled to the Revell kit, it is just under 70mm tall. I'll try printing it and see how it goes.
PS. Render attached.

Xanther, I would love to get those masts in the 1/429 scale for my new project.

David, I can't seem to login to FSM, don't know what the issue is AND thanks for the photos of the hulls, I will try to imitate.

i have the same problem with FSM as i think many others do since the newest post was 17 days ago with ships at least a month ago.
here are some more pictures showing some of the process on correcting the stern.

starting stern corrections.jpg

what you see is the start of the 1st layer which has a void between the original stern & the 1st layer. after the 1st layer is done, it is carved, grinded then sanded with coarse sand paper. once that is done, the next 3 layers(1mm thick by 5mm wide strips) are added, parallel to the keel, then carved, grinded & sanded to get the correct shape as per Tuesday's pictures. after that is done, the framework for the torpedo bulges is started.

have you talked to xanthar on his 3d printing progress of those cage masts?

I've actually just done some updates to the the script in OpenSCAD that generates them. Now the tubes all start at the specified angular offsets and end at the proper heights, per the C+R drawings for BB-38. The difference is subtle and no one noticed it wasn't right before but, now it is correct : ) Attached is a render of both the Fore Mast, which is shorter, and the Main Mast.

Very cool project/diorama!

I had the privilege of diving on the Arizona, while living and working on Ford Island at the SEAL Delivery Team in the 1990s.

The monument is a national park, and the ranger was an archeologist. He recruited us to dive on the ship every few months to collect the coins thrown on the ship by tourists. All in an effort to stop galvanic corrosion. He had a plexiglass/waterproofed drawing of the ship (top & side views), as she sits today.

It would be great if you could get your hands on that resource!

As we dove, he would point to different items of note:
1. Ketchup bottles, still on the floor of the mess deck. This is where the majority of coins were, just yards to the left of the viewing platform in the photo below.
2. A clawfoot tub through a portal on the Captain's Cabin,
3. Finally, he had us slowly drop 5 stories into the turret of the aft gun that blew out, up, and ended 200yds on Ford Island (see photo of the empty aft turret). Here, deep in the bowels of the ship, covered with silt, there are 100s of small metal boxes, filled with the ashes of survivors who chose to be buried with their shipmates!!! Very somber, sobering and surreal!

Finally, important for your diorama: The top half of the ship's bow is completely gone! We had to swim 15-20 yards of open water to reach this part of the ship. It is amazing the power of the explosion that caused this damage! (see attached photo to see the missing bow section).

I hope to see more posts on your unique model/diorama!
