USS Constitution 1:48 Scale

Here are a few shots of the current state of the build. This summer I worked on the masts and the fighting tops. Obviously there are a lot of things still unfinished (e.g., painting the tops). I want to really focus on the hull now, so I can call it done, and then I’ll move to shrouds, yards, riggings and sails.

Beautiful. What did you use as deck stain?
Hi ilanortho! Sorry, but I don’t remember exactly the color. It was something I picked up at Home Depot. An oil based stain, and then I covered it with an oil based satin sealer. I’ve been on the USS Constitution a few times and the deck is a very weathered, and not very attractive, grey color. I wanted something that looked good, but not too dark. It may have been provincial stain. Thanks for the note. Are you building a model?

Thanks. Not building this, but always looking for a pleasing somewhat realistic deck finish.

Hallo @Chuck Fulcher
we wish you all the BEST and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Birthday-Cake
How is your project going? Are you still working on this model?
Thanks for the birthday wishes! . I am still working on the model. I started working on shrouds and standing rigging a while back. I’m applying rat lines to the main shroud now, which is my first experience with rat lines. Once you get the hang of tying little clove hitches, it not to bad. I’ll post some new photos soon.

Well, here are a few new photos of the build. As I mentioned earlier, I’m working on the starboard shrouds now. I imagine I have tied several hundred clove hitches by now. It’s probably not the best form to do all the shrouds on one side of the ship before doing the other side (asymmetrical), but it’s a hassle to turn the model, so this is how I’m doing it. I’ll start working the mizzenmast shroud tomorrow.

Looking at your fighting tops closely, because I am about to construct same for my 1:93 Mamoli Constitution, and thinking that the radiating battens would have caused the sharpshooters to risk tripping and falling. Marquardt page 94 shows planking, and while not entirely clear, would probably have been above the battens? Just asking.

Hi John! I had the same thought as you did, that all that planking was a trip hazard, but that is, apparently, the way they did it. See the photo below. Will you be posting your progress on SOS? Thanks, man, for the comment. Chuck1727738573145.jpeg

Thanks for that photo Chuck. I was still not totally convinced. Water would collect in those recesses. And it would not be the first time that a builder has misinterpreted plans. However, C Nepean Longridge in "The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships" page 173, deals with the exact topic in detail, and the battens are indeed located above the planks.
Constitution is my first wooden ship build, and I am learning heaps from my multitude of mistakes. But loving it. And also thoroughly enjoying SOS. Currently learning "the ropes" with my homemade ropewalk. Photo of my build so far, below. The ship's boats are Shicheng 1:96, but exact copies of plans from Marquandt. BTW, is it acceptable to post my photos on your thread?
