USS Constitution 1:70 Scratch

I’ve started working on the gratings at the bow. Unlike the real ship or the plans, I won’t be making them out of many separate pieces. Instead, each side will be built from just two parts.

I’ve already made the forward gratings, but I haven’t glued them in place yet.

At this stage, since I don’t want the ship to take up more length by extending the hull, I decided not to add further elements to the bow.

Instead, I returned to working on the masts. I began constructing the main topsail mast. Using an 8 mm round dowel, I cut it to the appropriate length and shaped the lower square and octagonal sections with the milling machine. I then tapered the remaining upper part up to the octagonal shoulder on my lathe with the help of sanding, and afterwards created the shoulder itself with the mill. Initially, I mistakenly cut the dowel too short, so I had to extend the square-sectioned portion above the shoulder by adding an extra piece.

Once the topmast was prepared, I made the crosstrees and mounted them in place.
