Vasa - 1:65 DeAgostini [COMPLETED BUILD]

I‘m about to start mine too, Paul. I won’t attach them to the masts until I get to my daughter‘s house, but they will be attached to the yards in the next two weeks. I’ll complete the standing rigging, ratlines, and running rigging when I get there. I’ll have three weeks with nothing else to do. If it takes longer, I’ll just stay there until it’s all done. I also have problems trying to determine exactly where everything goes, especially the blocks on the yards. The only are different from Anderson. And trying to decipher which is clew, buntline, bowline, sheet, reef line, brace, lift…I’m worn out thinking about it.
Hmm. Does she know that you may be moving in ROTF? Even with nothing to do I think it will take WAY more than three weeks...

I have found it is necessary to read Anderson very carefully. In only a few paragraphs he will cover different periods in history as well as English and Continental (Foreign) building practices. And to make matters more confusing the French seem to go their own way at times. It's easy to read too quickly and end up thinking he is saying something he's not. Well, at least I have been guilty of that.

Nothing is simple, is it?

Thanks Kirill. In order to furl some of the sails I'll need to avoid anything that makes the sail material stiff - or at least that's my current thought. Open to correction here.
Good day Paul,
I thought it would help , using pva treatment and ironing after - for sewing stage only, when more handy to work with material which is like paper...it is my pure suggestion...I never sewing my sails...
Next stage , furling...all You will need , to make them wet again...
and anyway, to form all that necessary folds and make sails look realistic, You will need soak cloth in pva solution and than start making sail furled, and use some hair dryer to fix these formed folds...
Without soaking sails( made from cloth) in pva ( white wood clue)and makingvartificial folds I think it is not possible to create necessary shape of folded sails/ half folded as an example... for such small scale of the model like yours...due to fabric naturevand scale of the model doesn't meet each other :)))
Otherwise there is a risk to have sails which will looks like made from metal or plastic sheet :))) when installed on the model, even they are perfectly sewed...
ps
There is a link to one of other many ways how to make them

Absolutely right!
He gives exactly information, but need to be attentevely when read text and sort out relevant information which is suitable for your case...

Hi Grant,

Yes, I have seen it done better. Cotton ropes are probably the solution as opposed to my polyester ones. Or maybe silk. Of course, and I'm confident most everyone will agree, better examples can be found on this forum for most everything we do on these ships. But I don't have enough years left to make this a ten-year build ROTF. I just moved the box containing my next build to the basement so the sirens contained therein could no longer be heard (What about me? I'm right here. Build me. Make me yours...). Sigh.

Oh, and the knighthead is off-center here to clear the stay that runs the centerline. There are several examples of that sort of thing on the Vasa which I have not noticed on later ships.
Good Morning Paul....a little off the subject. My curiosity is getting the better of me.... your next build??? Here is my guess......It will be a POF with loads of detail, not too much painting and of high quality, probably a pear wood based model- Something like Belle Poule, Syren or Winchelsea. Lessor probability HMS Granado or HMS Blandford.(I don't see you enjoying the British ships) Am I getting warm?

I admire your choice to go for sails Paul - Nice! Good luck with these, I think it will most definitely make your VASA a magic ship. Cheers Grant

Nah... Paul will need a vacation once Wasa is complete. His project will be slightly less ambitious, perhaps something like this.

Well, you are a keen observer of me Grant. Most certainly POF. I have two kits already in hand. Bought one with pear (Blandford) after doing a bunch of research and then did an impulse buy from a forum member of an out-of-production boxwood kit (Kingfisher, but it could be turned into any swan class ship). I will probably sell the Blandford and someone will end up with a great kit at a fair price (offers anyone? PM me because I want to be respectful of our forum sales platform). Having said that, I love what @Keef is doing with the Blandford right now.

At the end of the day I am more intrigued by the notion of building a kit from boxwood which is becoming increasingly unavailable. Having two kits pending is actually something that is driving me crazy. Plus, my wife tells me that I will never build the second one because once I have done something I won't go back to that same well to drink (that is - there is only one POF kit-based build in me). I don't doubt her assessment...37 years as of today (or as I like to say, 35 happy years; the first two were rough ROTF, she thought she was getting a husband, what she got was a post-doctoral resident).

BUT, my Vasa could use a support vessel (chaloup) don't you think?

Dear Paul You know my sentiments. If your wife is correct in her surmise then all I can say is that you have chosen to build one of the best POF "Kits" there is. So if there is only one POF build in you, you have certainly spent it on the right model. And make no mistake - there is a good deal of scratch-building involved there.

Congratulations then, 37 years is fantastic! I would imagine the only similarity between medicine(dental) or otherwise and ship building is you will always only be practicing at it:)

I thought every model involved scratch-building. At least for me every piece I pick up requires me to scratch my head :)

Good evening Paul. Ha I was close- A @dockattner Kingfisher...that would be something to behold.

Funny you mention your 37 years, Arlene and I celebrated our 32nd yesterday. Time flys! Another parallel is I was doing my board exam and articles (not quite the same as your residency I know) in our first for two years. Seems like yesterday.

Anyway back to VASA- yes she undoubtedly needs a support vessel. :D. Cheers Grant

Well 32 and 37 years are great that things have gone well in our modern times, but it means your not really old farts like me.

My grand Admiral and I have had 42 years together so far, with a great crew of 4 to help out, which also brings 4 crew in training with them.

I have on of similar kits from LSS I got from a fellow member of this grand forum, now to find time to build it along with all the other kits in SABLE pile.

Well we’ve got you all beat. 59 years with my Admiral. Not looking good for us making 60 years though. I do qualify for “Old fart”

Congratulations on 37 married years Paul, sometimes I think the wives know us better than we do ourselves.
Like Grant 32 years and counting for me too, now where did those years go....
