Veteran Status?

31years British merchant navy – radio officer – 19 ships. Including over a year in the Falklands in 1982/83 when my ship wasrequisitioned as a minehunter support ship. Here I am keeping theanchor watch in 1982 in Port Stanley. I mainly built merchantships, both sail and steam, but have built a couple of warships. Scratchbuilt only, could never get on with kits of any kind.

I'm curious to know how many veterans are present? What branch? What sparked your interest in crafting model ships?

I'll start. I'm a US Navy veteran, served 1987-1991 on the USS Ticonderoga CG-47. Among other things, I was in Operation Desert Shield (which preceded Operation Desert Storm). I purchased a wooden ship while deployed to Spain directly from Artesania and have been carrying it around for over 30 years. I finally broke it open 1.5 years ago and have been enjoying working on it.

Army, Sergeant E-5, 1972 to 1978. Four years in Germany and finished out in Washington State.

As a kid, I built mostly WWII airplane models. I set up hanging dioramas and shot them up with anti-aircraft fire (bb guns).

Now, 55 years later, I decided to jump back in to pass time while my GF is away working. Ships looked most interesting so here I am, learning.

RCAF/CAF 1964-1970 Pineteen Line. Bought Esmiralda from Occre a couple of years ago when I retired. Still a work in progress. Became interested in woodworking for 20 years. Just a natural process I guess. Live in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada at the head of the Great Lakes.
My Dad was an RCAF radar tech on the Pinetree Line. Until I was 12 I grew up on mostly remote bases, St. Margarets NB, Penhold AB, Moisie QC.

I'm working with the Navy SEALs on a brand new National Navy SEALs Museum in San Diego. (https://navysealmuseumsd.org/) It's a great project. It'll open at the end of this year. It's been great working with these guys.
Thanks for your work on the new NSW museum! Glad you're enjoying work with our community. I'll be sure to visit next time we're in SD!!

21 years USN and 10 years Navy Civil Service. Interest piqued while a midshipman at US Naval Academy, where I would walk through the museum, in awe of the POW bone models and the Navy Board models. Spent 30 years toting around my scratch build of the HMS Serapis (Hawaii, Monterey Ca, Scotland, Bahrain, San Diego). Finally finished it after retiring and now working on a cross section of Bonhomme Richard.

I was drafted in 1965 in my 3rd year of college but was given my choice of service. My father and stepfather were both Naval Aviators and served in WWII. Needless to say, The Navy was my choice. 3 Deployments in the Blue water Navy aboard the USS Intrepid CVA11. Volunteered for the Brown Water Navy. discharged as an IC-2 in 1969.
As for modeling I built my first model when I was around 10 or 11, Wanted more of a challenge and started several Wood model ships around 1975. Today I build both ship models and Paper models of ships and Armor.
