Went through morse intercept school Ft Devens 1964. Then on to radio direction finding. Still have it!

Fun decoding your message! .-.-.-

USMC 28 years active & reserve; retired in 2004. While in reserves worked for US Navy and Defense Logistics Agency. In the summer of 1998 I commanded the Marine detachment onboard the USS Constitution during the 2nd year of her 200th birthday celebration; detachment was made up of reserve Marines from various units throughout New England. Retired from government service a year ago. As a kid I built plastic airplane, ship and monster movie models. Got into wooden ship models in 2020 while in Germany working for US government.

Good to see so many with veteran status from around the world.

AD USN 01FEB1983 - 31JAN2007 Naval Aircrewman. Now a GS-13 Civil Servant with the USN living in southern Spain. 42 years total so far and plan to finally retire-retire 31AUG2027. Started building model ships when I was 8, first kit was the old 1/426 Revell USS Pennsylvania.
How are things in Rota these days?

Definitely a UH-1. That and the 20-round magazines date the picture. Must have had some downtime....
My experience with the Huey - I took off in about 875 flights over the years but never landed in one. I used to jump them. Over the years, they added up. I was president of the Ft Monmouth Sport Parachute Club. And also jumped with the WestvPoint skydiving team. It was fun while it lasted! ( had little over 3200 jumps)

Nice! Ft. Monmouth - there's a name I haven't heard in awhile.

Rode up and down in Hueys many times but only jumped from one once. My most interesting Huey experience came in Alaska in the training areas outside Ft, Richardson one winter. My mortar platoon was the last in order of movement back from a week of training and were waiting patiently for pick-up by 2 Hueys at the LZ (a random open field). We were never able to verify this, but apparently the pilots forgot where we were and although we could hear them overhead and see their running lights, contacting them on the radio wasn't helping - they apparently were having difficulty finding our grid location on the map. A search through our platoon equipment brought out the emergency locator beacon but the battery was dead; ditto with the batteries in most of the flashlights that we'd put out to mark the LZ. In desperation my platoon sergeant called over two of the squad leaders (both smokers) and had them stand out in the center of the LZ and 'flick their Bics' (lighters). Suddenly a voice came over the radio telling us they saw our lights. I hate to think what might have been if there wasn't several feet of snow covering the area serving as a reflecting surface....

Served two years on active duty with USNR at Subic Bay, the Philippines, 1967-68, as a photojournalist. Started making models as a kid with a neighbor friend who is now a master modeler and a retired aircraft restorer with the Smithsonian. Now I concentrate on wood sailing ships.

Does your friend continue to build models?

I'm curious to know how many veterans are present? What branch? What sparked your interest in crafting model ships?

I'll start. I'm a US Navy veteran, served 1987-1991 on the USS Ticonderoga CG-47. Among other things, I was in Operation Desert Shield (which preceded Operation Desert Storm). I purchased a wooden ship while deployed to Spain directly from Artesania and have been carrying it around for over 30 years. I finally broke it open 1.5 years ago and have been enjoying working on it.
David Rasch HHB/83dFA 1971-74. Daddy was navy and so was his dad serving from 1911-1916. My uncle was EM1 aboard a submarine. killed in the pacific 1945. Me? Can't walk on water.
