Willem Barentsz by Kolderstok AD 1596

Not much ship building happening. I'm "wasting" all that good time binging on the Little League World Series Playoffs. Four games today starting at 1:00 pm EDT.

But I did manage to create a small Porcupine this morning.

Just a little bit more progress.

Good morning Jan. Porcupine looks great. Cheers Grant

Building up the rear wales, Jan - that is excellent! That adds quite a bit to the overall hull shape.

I’m following the masters build log, supplemented by the build instructions. I noticed this morning that in the deck planking step I managed to plank over the mast holes without marking their locations.

A minor misstep.:(:(

Sorted! That is really a good-looking deck, Jan! How about those front canopy railings?

More progress today between LLWS games.

Two coats of Tung oil on the hatches

@Heinrich, what to do about the deck, clear coat, oak or a lighter stain?

Question #2, removing the bulkheads before the inner planking of that area. The build instructions indicate removing all of them, you used Piets method and left the last one. Pros/cons???

The hatches look fantastic Jan! Seeing that you are going to follow the Kolderstok build, I would strongly advise leaving the last bulkhead as per my and Piet's builds. You do have to cut off the two ears that protrude above the crossbar though. Remember to scribe the bulwarks on the inside with a pen/pencil using Bulkhead #7 as a guide, BEFORE removing that bulkhead.

Great, I will tackle that in the morning. Thanks for the response.

Dear Frank, my friend,

If Jan allows me, I would like to answer your question if I may.

Please see the same phenomenon in my build.

And from the top.

The hull has two pronounced "cheeks" or hollows - these are areas that first bend inwards before bending outwards again. The first one that you will see at the bow (when I start planking that area) and the other one where you have indicated. Maybe that is what confused you.

On the ship of Barentsz these cheeks are still mild compared to those of the Geunieerde Provincien of 1603.

These cheeks or hollows were typical of ships of that era. Jan has built a very good hull if he has achieved those cheeks.
