ZHL San Felipe 1690 - Ted R

I remember reading something about the stencils for the gun ports not being correct compared to the deck levels
Is anyone aware of that problem carried over to the ZHL kit?

I have installed both gun deck platforms.
The dummy guns will be drilled into a 10 x10 x 20 mm block glued vertically. See photos. I remember reading about a problem with the gun port vs deck levels on several other San Felipe builds.is anyone aware of this problem carrying over to the ZHL kit.
It seems with this vertical block layout I have more leeway.

I decided to use Super Aliphatic glue to secure the frames to the keel.
The Aliphatic glue sucked right into the crack through cappilairy action.
This model has an abundance of reinforcement for the frames.
This kit is assembling very easily. All the parts fit firmly with little filing needed.
The straightness of the assembled keel and hull is phenomenal.
Once the glue on the frames ha set I'm going to remove both gun deck platforms and glue them back with PVA glue.

I completed the dummy cannon blocks.
Read through the plans again. I'm a lot more at ease as it's all starting to make sense.
I've watched every San Felipe video I can find on YouTube and read all the ZHL build logs. Even though I the manufacturers vary their methods the end result is practically the same. If I'm making any sense.

My final effort was to get out the dummy cannon template. Oh boy, nothing seems to fit. I think I will put it down for the day and come back with a fresh set of eyes and attitude tomorrow morning.
Happy modeling

Had my first oopsie. I glued in the two part 14s at the stern. One of them slid down while clamped. I don't know if I clamped the offside in low or clamp tension moved it.
The lesson is that flat parts tend to move around when glued.
It turns out the the glue I'm using, Gorilla PVA, is stronger than the glue used by the plywood vendor. You can see it the photo where the plywood delaminated because the glue wasn't under enough pressure.

Why the gorila glue ? Use any other PVA brand that can be easily unglue with alcohol.

I will post later what am I using.

I glued in the bow spacers numbers 15.
Took a photo down the center of the hull to show how straight this is so far.
Happy modeling IMG20251016161015.jpg
Sorry,
Sorry my hands are shaking todayIMG20251016161004.jpg

Ted , these are the glues I am using. You can dissolve them without any problem with alcohol. They dry very fast, in minutes. They are very strong after a few hours. And they dry clear.

Two new fitment problems. Part 18 does not fit the edge of frame 11 as indicated on the drawing. It is the same on both sides.
Problem 2 The hole for the rudder post is too far after at the stern. The front part of the part 50 needs to be trimmed to get part 51 flush with frame 12IMG20251016182517.jpgIMG20251016182236.jpgIMG20251016182232.jpgIMG20251016182216.jpgIMG20251016182212.jpg

I briefly got out the cannon template and laid it in place. Still confused as to what I need to do. Goin to go back tomorrow and reread every build log until I understand this.

I think I have installed frame 12 too high.
See circled part on drawing.
I'm sure I have a reputation for rework.
Here we go again.IMG20251017084301.jpgIMG20251017084127.jpgIMG20251017084229.jpg

Hi Ted,

That's a fantastic choice! I'm going to be following your build closely since this model is absolutely at the top of my wish list. I honestly think it's the most beautiful version of this ship. Best of luck!

Welcome on board. The more eyes watching the better off I will be. I'm fairly new to ship modeling and frequently need guidance.
