I'm new to model boat building, I recently purchased a small Schooner HALCON sailing ship 1/100 scale and to my surprise there's very little instructions, they barely show u how to assemble the hull and deck and there's no instructions at all for assembling the sail's or the masts.
I did find online some videos of the build but it's in a foreign language and doesn't really help, I'm wondering if anyone knows any sites or videos I can use to guide me, especially with bending the 3mm thick pieces that the canon's stick out of. If someone has knowledge of bending thin plywood like this I'd much appreciate any help, I can't start planking until I get these on, the part I'm mostly worried about is where the port holes for the canon's to stick out I'm worried about breaking or splitting the wood as it is very thin. Again any assistance would be gladly appreciated, thank you Peter Michael

Thanks, I've built different models but mostly plastic models when I was younger. I'm only getting the hang of using this Ship's of Scale forum and I've found more helpful info on this than anywhere else, I've never built any model ships especially wooden ones and when I bought the HALCON 1840 1/100 scale model it said for 14+ so I thought it might have been slightly easier but with lack of instructions it nearly makes it impossible but I'll persevere and try my best to build my model, I'll send some pics as I go hopefully it will work out but it will be good to learn how to work with wood like this

also from my side a warm welcome here on board of our forum.
I realized, that you found already the existing building log of the Halcon.....maybe it would be good to start your own building log, so you can show your progress and work, and we are able to give hints and tipps, or answer your questions if necessary and requested

I've just glued the deck last night but I think the prow to which I mount the bowsprit on the model I got is raised up higher than it's supposed to be, I was just wondering does anyone know if it is supposed to be like that or is it because it's a cheap Chinese model I got. It means when I fit the rail I might have to file where they meet at the prow to fit the bowsprit correctly.
This is my first model boat ever to make and the instructions I got are useless, any hints or tips about this would be gladly appreciated, thanksIMG_20210511_215414_3.jpg

Thanks for making me feel welcome, I've just learned how to attach a picture of my build but now I know how to I will keep showing how my build is coming along

Welcome aboard
Thank you, I don't think I'd have gotten this far without the help of a lot of people on this forum. Slowly but surely I'll keep posting threads if my project, this is my first ever boat to build and because the instructions were so bad it really is with my own research and help from Ships of Scale, it's an excellent site and brilliant to get to know likeminded people from around the world

I too am building this model and am getting stuck on the masts, bowsprit, and booms. If anyone has lengths and such for this it would be great!
Hi,

I just saw your post and I'm also building the Halcon,
Here is dimensions I found on a YouTube video (hope it will help evenif I respond a little late) :
He used the sail dimensions (I don't have them) to dertemine the masts length

Hi, I've just joined the forum after searching around for help building the 1:100 scale Halcon.
I bought mine from eBay back in 2018, when it got stashed away in the loft due to other ongoing things.
Having just been grounded due to a back injury, I had my ship kits brought out again.
Firstly, I'm angry at myself for buying it, but also at the seller for deception. The photos that advertised it were nothing like the thing that I unpacked and started to build. Admittedly, assembly of the hull and superstructure is pretty straightforward, except for the fact that the cutouts in the deck were spaced differently on both sides. Didn't realise this until putting the two side pieces on and found the upright bits visible through the cannon ports on one side. Sorry, I don't know the correct names for any of these parts, but I'm trying to learn. As mentioned by Greenfish earlier in this thread, no information for sail sizes, mast dimensions or rigging.
The cannons in this kit are just press out wooden bits like the rest of the kit. No metal parts like on the photo. Lots of bits for the rigging shown in the photos were not in the kit. There are also bits that are not numbered and not shown in the diagram.
All in all, it looks like I have bought a cheap and nasty version. I'm really tempted to bin this and splash out on the NIDALE model that is showing all the correct parts in the ebay ad. Better still, should I go for the 1/48th scale model from ZHL model? It looks really impressive.

welcome to our forum
and also
welcome to the reality, especially the reality of older and relatively cheap produced model kits
It would be interesting once to count the really finished Halcon models - but my guess is, that most of the kist were never really built
Nevertheless there are some really good completed models, but they are rare
Take it as a learning model - in order to get experience with planking etc.
You mentioned as alternative "the 1/48 sclae model" - which one you have in mind?
Because ZHL is a producer, but most of his business is also in selling kits of other producers...

Hello Uwek and thanks for the welcome. It doesn't give any manufacturers name in the ZHL ad, it's just listed as: Halcon Baltimore Schooner, Scale 1/48 750mm 30" Wood Model Ship Kit. Priced at US$149.
I hate to concede defeat on any project, but this is so frustrating. I just had a look at the post that a guy put up on a Russian forum. Pretty amazing job he's made of that ship. The planking is exactly as you would see it on the real ship, not as shown on the diagram in this kit. I think that I'll have a practice at planking mine the way the Russian guy did, then put it aside and carry on with my big Revell Cutty Sark, which also got stashed in the loft in 2018. I've got the hull assembled and sprayed on that one and the deck is now in place.

Hi Murf here, I know the feeling well, I also bought the cheap Chinese kit, parts missing, hopeless plans (if they can be called plans) and to top it all off I can not read Chinese and the short instructions for the masts and sails are all in Chinese. Perhaps this will teach me to do a bit of research before I purchase another model. Wishing you all the luck with your model.

Finally got back to building. I did bin the first cheap one and bought the Nidale one. Hull is currently at the paint stage.
I've been having fun with the lifeboat. It is waiting to be planked at the moment.
I decided to rope the stocks on the anchors for more realism.
I'll post more as this progresses.
On another note, I've bought a Mantua models 1/200 scale HMS Victory. What a kit. I'm really looking foreward to getting started on that.

Hmmm, the autocorrect went crazy on that one. It should have said "slimming down the dowels for the capstan arms.
