I should explain mysel why I haven't posted anything on Royal Luis. First one is lack of time other is gathering resources for this project. I really shoundn't start it as a first build but watching what @GrantTyler is doing with his Victory made me want to try it any way.

There is no way I could build whole hull from scratch so I oredered one from @SZKUTNIK. I think it'll be first build log of 3d printed hull because I haven't found any other on internet.
I still need couple of tools but I will start building in june/july so this is no problem.

I haven't decided if it will be Le Commerce de Marseille/L'Ocean. It all depends on my carving skills or depth of wallet.:rolleyes:

Thank you all for responses. I'm as excited as you are.

While I was reading plans I discovered there're many elements which are 3mm,2mm and even less thick. What really suprised me in this scale. For example pulleys which I recently made 2mm x 3mm are exacly the same as 8punder gun riging pulley.

Forgot to mention scale it's 1/72. Maybe some admin could add it to the thread's name

I bought some african woods: ebony, padouk padok and blood wood.

First question. In the description of auction of ebony there was sth like this " the wood has self lubrication capabilities, especiali in water" So is it harder to bend it with electric plank beder? Will it leave some dirty marks? Does ebony need more atention/special treatment than "normal" wood?

I would like to make whole ship in natural colors of wood, but other option is painting pear to get it black and leave rest as it is.

If I would make it only in natural wood doest it exclude making copper plates?


I'm also looking for some nice wood to make mast and yards. Yards black. Masts sth like this(1:31min). Thanks for any suggestions.

Ebony is really not easy to work - the dust is unhealthy in addition and is making a lot of "dirt"

One very good alternative would be black hornbeam

There's Belle Poule with hull planked only with ebony but can't find the thread. It was not so long ago here on SOS.

Bloodwood for gun carriages

I know the Belle Poule built by Bernard Frölich who used extensively Ebony

and this model is shown on the cover of the monograph

another possibility is f.e. to use Ecoline paints - the grain of the original wood will be still visible

just came accross and remembered the model where black hornbeam was used for the wales. Only that you get this info

Trying to make gun carriages from bloodwod.

Only part of 12pdr and 8pdr will be fully asembled rest'll be simplified.
Still don't have much time for modeling, but wanted to test new woods.

First atempt on 36pdr. Milled red parts.

Milling caaragies wasn't a good idea, at least with this wood -> much harder then pear.


I only managed to cut it aross when I tried other way saw's engine started to smell"funny" and said no,no.o_O

I could use my father's "big" tablesaw to try other method of making carragies, but it's blade is 4mm thicc and that would mean a lot of material losses.

I really like color and structure of this wood, but it's hard to work with and after eatch cut I have to clean saw's blade. I think I'll make simplified carragies out of pear or other easier wood and stain them to red. Bloodwood or other special wood will be reserved only for 12 and 8 pdr on visible decks

Those colors are soo betifull I still want them to use it on my ship despite naerly burning my tablesaw's engine :) Will I manage? I don't have slightest idea.

Wojtas, good afternoon. If you need red looms, why not use red hornbeam? Why do you need padauk, which is very difficult to process?
