HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Good morning Heinrich- what is your ETA with your sanding...I’m biting my nails in anticipation to see the first oak plank go on.:D...sorry no pressure;).Cheers Grant
Hi Grant! It's good that you keep the pressure up, but unfortunately there is no hurrying this laborious process with which I am busy now. From my elbow to my fingertips, my right arm feels like it belongs to someone else! :) I hope to have the hull fairing done and the place cleaned up by Friday - before the Admiral arrives. I imagine I will start planking on Saturday or Sunday.

Sasha and I spoke about "building-up" the false keel where I damaged it while sanding. How to do this? I will show you my recipe.

1. Collect sawdust. Of that, I have plenty.
2. Add a big blob of PVA.
3. Stir very well until ...
4. You have a nice, thick and uniform paste.
5. Apply to the affected area and leave until tomorrow morning. It will be as hard as granite and can then simply be carefully sanded to shape.

It is not much of a train smash on the WB, because the garboard strakes will lie flush against the keel, while the real keel still needs to be installed on top of the false keel, but nevertheless, I want the maximum gluing area for the mounting of the real keel - that is why I have filled it up.
A recipe for homemade filler! Thumbsup

Hello Everyone

The provisional first sanding has been completed on both sides. Now the bow fillers on the Port Side can go on.

I will start with this immediately.
Great work on all that sanding Heinrich, a lot of effort will surely reap the rewards of an easier planking phase. Maybe you descend from a long line of sculptors? :)

Oh no no no no nooo, Mark! I do not have one ounce of artistic ability. Why do you think I am building a ships/s that require zero paint work or any form of decoration? Both my grandfathers were model makers in their later years after retirement and specialized in horse carts ("Kapkarre"), ox wagons and miniature furniture. I think my love for working with all things wood, probably comes from them - I just wish I had their ability.

Heinrich, I'm sure your grandfathers are looking down at you and thinking ... 'ons het hom darem goed geleer' ;)

Thank you, Mark, I appreciate that! The funny thing is, I was much too small for them to teach me - it is only in later years I have come to appreciate their work. I have always loved models - RC flying and boating, but I have never really built anything. Then some years back I got a 1935 Bowman Swallow steamboat which I restored - I fell hook, line and sinker for the idea of building with wood.

Great story Heinrich, and now we too can benefit from the passion you developed for wood modelling Thumbsup

The keel is fine even though it looks like I have sanded part away at the bow - that is just the char that has been sanded away. It still presents a flat and full surface for the reel keel to be glued on later.

Nap time!
