HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

I agree Heinrich, they say it all.
Stunning work my friend :) :)
Thank you so much Peter. I have used 4mm wide planks (instead of the 6mm wide ones on the rest of the hull) and not sanded them at all. I wanted the individual planks to be visible - otherwise it would just look a bit slab-sided (like on WB#1). I much prefer this look.

Very elegant contours here Heinrich. Fits the vessel nicely!
Thank you, Paul - I took great care to make sure that the outer wall follows the hull lines perfectly for an integrated look. This canopy is also lower than on WB#1 while the cutouts at the front and back are far more curvaceous.

Such a beautiful build Heinrich. This is one of those times I feel it’s ok to plagiarize the comments from the last few posts - “awesome”, “stunning”, “beauty”, “elegant”, what more can I say my friend.
Wow, my friend - you will make me blush! Seriously though, thank you so much for your kind comments, Roger - they are much appreciated.

I just felt like playing around tonight with a few pictures of how the front canopy blends in with the lines of the hull. Immediately after I have taken these pics, I started with the inner planking of the bulwarks between the two canopies. Unspectacular at this stage, but crucial to the overall finished look of the model.

There are still plenty of finishing (and difficult) touches to be done, but for now, I am extremely pleased with the overall look of the model. I believe the essence of De Veer's drawings have been captured.

Looking fantastic Heinrich,

Cheers,
Stephen.

Dear Friends

Work continued tonight after work. The double planking between the two canopies have been completed, sanded and stained and the center canopy bulwarks have been cut down and trimmed to the correct size and curvature.

Next up will be the placement of the stanchions in anticipation of the 6mm wide top railing that has to go on.

And a profile picture that shows the ship with the correctly trimmed bulwarks.

It's a beautiful sight Heinrich, she is looking awsome :) :)
Thank you so much, my friend. Slowly but surely, she is coming along. The oak has given me even more grey hairs than I already have, but when I look at the ship, it is worth it.

Good morning Heinrich. Beautiful for sure and as always great log posts. After all those challenges and “bashing” along the way you are owning this. Cheers Grant

Thank you, Grant. Instead of fighting each other, she is now coming along nicely to my hand (Touch wood!)

Good evening, Dear Friends

Progress continues with some of the nitty gritty and unspectacular work that takes place behind the scenes. The pictures are some of the least flattering ones you will see, but that is what it looks like with Work in Progress.

The preliminary set of stanchions between the two canopies have been placed on both sides. There are still more to come, but they will only be placed once the top railing has been glued down. On the Starboard side they have already been trimmed to a level that is flush with the existing top railing, whilst the ones on the Port Side will be sawn to size tomorrow night.

微信图片_20221012232743.jpg
The top bulwarks on the Port Side have also been shaped into their correct curvature - the starboard Side will hopefully be done tomorrow. If you want to know why only side had been done - contemplate this. Trying to cut through a double layer of oak planks (in total, 3mm thick) with an X-Acto knife while following an eyeballed line, took me an hour and a half and four blades later. You can clearly see the comparison with the uncut starboard side in the background.

And lastly, the customary overview picture. Now it's back to question papers and marking ... from the sublime to the ridiculous!

Hav'nt the got a hand jigsaw in China my friend?? first the jigsaw and finish it with sandpaper or files
only with an exacto knife is pretty dangerous
The X-Acto gets used for everything my friend. That is why I say, it is sometimes good that my fellow builders only get to see a finished section of the build. How I get to my destination is sometimes very unconventional. ROTF

Hello Friends

The stanchions between the two canopies have all been trimmed to size and, strictly speaking, I can now be forming and shaping the two top railings that need to go on.

微信图片_20221013180727.jpg
But then it dawned upon me that IF I am going to fit a front wall of the center canopy, I have to do it BEFORE the top railing goes on. The reason is that the top railing will extend all the way to where the front wall would be. (See picture above).

And that brings me to my dilemma. To front wall or not!

Barents-04 (2) - 副本.jpg
On his build, @Ab Hoving Ab has made provision for two doors, but at this point the doors had not yet been placed - or so it would seem. Interestingly, the front wall has been planked vertically and not with the overlapping (schotelende) planks as I have by now become used to on Dutch ships.

Schotten.png
His plans show the same configuration, but here it becomes obvious that no doors were used. In his drawings of the captain's cabin, Ab pertinently shows the doors, so we can assume it is no omission here. No why you would create a front wall, create the openings for two doors and then not place them - especially in a bitterly cold polar climate, is beyond my understanding.

Mees Ippel 6.jpg
Secondly, we have De Weerdt's interpretation where he has left out the front wall completely and the whole structure remains open.

WJacht.jpg
Thirdly, we have the @Kolderstok version which has a closed front wall AND two doors installed (exactly like I have built it on WB#1.

Now with all due respect to my learned friends, theirs are interpretations (as is my build), so I turned to what has become my favorite and the only original source - the drawings of Gerrit De Veer. Unfortunately, in this instance, the drawings are also contradictory.

Centre Canopy Red.png
On this drawing you will see a multitude of very closely grouped vertical lines in the red block which indicate an opening - thus a left-open front wall a la Gerald De Weerdt/replica.

Centre Canopy Green.jpg
While my favorite drawing clearly shows a closed structure with a single, arched door opening, but no door.

So, in summary, I have the following options:

Front wall left completely open.
Front wall with two door openings but no doors.
Front wall with two door openings and two doors.
Front wall with single door opening, but no door.

Which one would you guys go for?
