HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Hello Heinrich, I think the decision you will make is the right one, because it is your ship. ;)
I really appreciate the vote of confidence, Tobias! My decisions will be based on my research.

Hello Dear Friends

Today was one of those magnificent autumn days in Nantong that just couldn't be left to go wasted - so the girls and I went out to play.

It also gave me time to revisit the whole front canopy decision and I came to the following decision. There are only two proven options as shown in the drawings of Gerrit de Veer - completely open or covered with a single arch-domed opening but sans door (see pic below).

I have started work on making a template for the latter and will keep you posted when that is ready to be shown.

Once again, I want to thank you all for the tremendous response I have received from all of you. Unfortunately, I cannot please everyone, but rest assured that each and every suggestion was thoroughly considered.
Every time you post this picture (the second one :)) it makes me wonder why the people are so out of scale. Is that just the style of the time or??

This is a great observation Don, and one that has actually been discussed by the Linschoten Society at length. First off, we have to remember that these are the very first drawings (dare I say official) of Dutch maritime history and as such it is a very far cry from the superb work produced by the Van der Veldes (and many other prolific Dutch artists) of the 17th century. The rationale is that the pictures were more aimed at showing the epic struggles of the men against the polar backdrop. Hence, the depictions of the polar bears and walruses (which posed a constant and very serious threat to the men) and which are also out of scale, emphasized the day to day dangers the men had to face.

And yet, despite the obvious shortcomings of the picture, it still captures in my opinion, the essence of what Barentsz's ship might have looked like the best. The small size, the cramped environment and the beehive of daily activities are so well portrayed.

Good evening Heinrich. I’m coming in late and I see you have made a controversial Captains call. Without being swayed by your call I would have voted for it being closed with 2 doors. As you out rank me on the WB I will just nod my head and say “aye aye”Captain.ROTF.Cheers Grant
Hi Grant! No captain's call was made - just a thorough re-reading of my research and looking at the old pics again. A closed canopy with two doors, is the layout on WB#1 (see pic below), now it is time for the correct one! ROTF

After two failed attempts, I finally have a front wall template that I can work with. Now comes the first of the tricky parts. Create a doorless, arch-domed door opening.

I know this looks like nothing at this point, but just be patient. ROTF
