Normally, it would be, Paul. In my case, the definition of a captain is: "Can you decipher a quagmire of information successfully?"Definition of a captain: choosing to do what no one else wanted him to do and still being correct![]()

Oh, definitely Phil! These are expedition kayaks, so they have huge storage space below the hatches! In a controlled environment though, being a club member, launching from their jetty and using their boats - no alcohol! Can you carry a 6-pack of TsingTao (pei jo) in yer kayak?
Well it sure looks like great fun!Oh, definitely Phil! These are expedition kayaks, so they have huge storage space below the hatches! In a controlled environment though, being a club member, launching from their jetty and using their boats - no alcohol!
Absolutely great fun Phil, and the best is that it is also great exercise. My partners are both very athletic and outdoorsy, so I have my task cut out to keep up!Well it sure looks like great fun!
and most importantly don’t forget “there is no democracy at sea”Definition of a captain: choosing to do what no one else wanted him to do and still being correct![]()

I agree with Peter, good choice Heinrich. But Heinrich, you don't have to please everybody, you are the captain of this Willem Barentsz,So you are making the decisions.
After our input at your request
Every time you post this picture (the second oneHello Dear Friends
Today was one of those magnificent autumn days in Nantong that just couldn't be left to go wasted - so the girls and I went out to play.

It also gave me time to revisit the whole front canopy decision and I came to the following decision. There are only two proven options as shown in the drawings of Gerrit de Veer - completely open or covered with a single arch-domed opening but sans door (see pic below).

I have started work on making a template for the latter and will keep you posted when that is ready to be shown.
Once again, I want to thank you all for the tremendous response I have received from all of you. Unfortunately, I cannot please everyone, but rest assured that each and every suggestion was thoroughly considered.
Thank you, Roger. In the end, all I can do is to guess in a slightly more "educated" manner as to how things might have been.I agree with Peter, good choice Heinrich.
This is a great observation Don, and one that has actually been discussed by the Linschoten Society at length. First off, we have to remember that these are the very first drawings (dare I say official) of Dutch maritime history and as such it is a very far cry from the superb work produced by the Van der Veldes (and many other prolific Dutch artists) of the 17th century. The rationale is that the pictures were more aimed at showing the epic struggles of the men against the polar backdrop. Hence, the depictions of the polar bears and walruses (which posed a constant and very serious threat to the men) and which are also out of scale, emphasized the day to day dangers the men had to face.Every time you post this picture (the second one) it makes me wonder why the people are so out of scale. Is that just the style of the time or??
Hi Grant! No captain's call was made - just a thorough re-reading of my research and looking at the old pics again. A closed canopy with two doors, is the layout on WB#1 (see pic below), now it is time for the correct one!Good evening Heinrich. I’m coming in late and I see you have made a controversial Captains call. Without being swayed by your call I would have voted for it being closed with 2 doors. As you out rank me on the WB I will just nod my head and say “aye aye”Captain..Cheers Grant
True my friend. I have an idea but how it all will turn out, is just as much of a surprise to me.That is a virtue that we as modelbuilders should have.
So we wait and see what you bring us
You done yet HeinrichAfter two failed attempts, I finally have a front wall template that I can work with. Now comes the first of the tricky parts. Create a doorless, arch-domed door opening.

I know this looks like nothing at this point, but just be patient.![]()
