Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Looks promising! ;) That will be my new saying... ROTF
….the jury is still in session ROTF
Me too, we're a bit crazy.

Grant, once again I'm amazed by your work, it's going to be a beauty, I have a feeling.
Good morning Tobias. Thank you. I hope your feeling is correct. :D.
Cheers Grant
Ugly, sexy, whatever. Looks like you are making splendid progress. Wow I just realized you’re working on two builds at the same time. Who does that? ROTF
Good morning Jan. ……and some work on 3…. ROTF . My Victory is waiting on some 3D parts from Shapeways and for me to make 50 odd little railings (really that boring stuff ) for the stern. I should have used a courier for the order from Shapeways. With SA postal I may get these next yearROTF.
Cheers Grant

Good morning Johan. I better not buy some wings then….just stick to Red Bull. ROTF Speaking of Red Bull I’m tired of Max winning….hmmm. Cheers Grant
Finally, I get some time to look, browse and comment. I think the Xebec is the kind of build that begs for personalization, and I am so glad that you went for the Barbary Corsair look. I also believe that this will be a special model. As to Max, if you're good, you're good! :)

Good morning. Haven’t had much time to play recently. I got tired of sanding so ricochet rabbit Grant decided to make a wale and veneer the stern bulkwarks.

I beveled a line into the wale to give it some shape. The plain 3mm kit wale did not do it for me. I also let the wale naturally follow the hull and bulkwark curve. I like it. :D

I cut some left over walnut planks from the Victory and added a 1.5mm strip which will follow the railing line.

As I understand wales : Many call them rubbing strakes but this was not their purpose in the 18th century. They were fitted on the widest part of the hull for strength, structural support and many other reasons. Not going to bore you guys here. I am only putting one main wale on my Xebec hull and a smaller support one running beneath the gun ports. It would make sense to have one where all the gun ports are to include structural support.
Cheers Grant

Good morning Heinrich. I am hoping I can pull this off. I am struggling a little with the Lime wood to get shape into it- very soft. The veneer is horrid. I planked the little section of the stern bulkwark and it has no margin for error. Not my style I like to have a little leeway to sand nicely to finish. I really have to get my first layer perfect to make this work. Sand…ployfiller…..more sando_O.

Anybody but Max….… he is making it a little mundane. Let’s hope something starts to happen in race 2. Even Lewis ROTF
Cheers Grant

well done Grant. Your wales at the bow area are going a bit steep upwards? Is this on purpose? I like the single wale instead of two. The limewood strips arn't that great. If I had to do it again, I changed them into walnut strips.
Love the black on the bulwarks tho! Thumbsup

Hi Grant, you have achieved a real mediterranean feel to your hull. Looks great. What type of woo are you going to use for the hull's second planking? And I just thought of something, did they use any sort of anti-fouling coating back then? Must try and find out. Great work cheers JJ..

Good morning Peter. I just let them follow the shape of my hull. In my plan they where not so accentuated at the bow and thought of changing them, however I rather enjoy it. It also works really nice for my planking below the wales. Lime wood . I really dislike it. I am going to paint the wales black so should be ok. Thanks. Cheers Grant

Good morning Jack. Thanks. The wood on this kit is horrid, but is was very cheap and expected. The hull above the wales is lime veneer and below Sapele veneer. My Xebec is in the period 1700- 1750 and these were influence by the Spanish and French ships of the time. I guess they must have has similar processes as the Europeans re anti fouling - no coppering tho (too heavy for the Xebec). Cheers Grant

Anybody but Lewis, please, the..... Ah, never mind.
On second thought, the racing weekends would be a lot more relaxing in my family, when another star driver took first place.

Just catching up now Grant and bookmarking your Xebec build. Great progress so far, the woodwork must be something of a relief after all the blood, tears and sweat of all the Victory's rigging? Looking forward to your continued work Thumbsup

Good morning Jack. Not at all. There is one company which sells exotic wood but the blocks are way to large for my little table saw. They also don’t have boxwood or pear. To get anything here is off the charts expensive or takes like 6 months or never. At my current skill level I make do with what the kits provide however there will be a time when I’m going to have to spend a little Tom on wood supplies. Cheers Grant

Good morning Mark. Good to hear from you. It’s a complete change and fun to cut wood again. I’m waiting on parts from Shapeways to finish my Victory. I was a complete “nob” and used normal post….you know the story…could take a while.ROTF.Cheers Grant

Good afternoon. I still cannot motivate myself to sand and ploy fill moreSleepSleep….so worked on my transom.

WIP:
Planked with veneer, painted black. I planked the first 4 planks below the transom in Lime upto the wales. The bulwarks and gun ports I intend to leave natural lime ( I know not the best but will try make this work), so the patterns flow.

I am a little concerned as I lay the Lime horizontally up to the wale and I’m not sure if this fits the time period? I can’t find any info pertaining to Xebecs on this but all the models I have seen show “diagonal vertical” or the hull strakes bending up onto the stern?

I have made a cut out for the extended grid deck hanging off the stern on Xebecs to fit. I will use nails and a frame for strength. Hope it works.

My own design for the extension to the bulkwark. A K.I.S.S. design. I will only fit this much later.

Cheers Grant
