Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Hello my friend. The planking is coming along VERY nicely. Just take your time with it, and I am sure all will be well. If all goes well I will be booking my flight tickets to Cape Town in the coming week!

Great looking planking Grant. I threw out the idea of treenails because of scale but yours at 1:60 are very impressive. Nice job indeed.
Good morning Roger.Thank you. I am happy with the treenails above the wale, however I did some on the Sapele below and aesthetically I think it would have been better to leave them out. Too late now so I progress.

Good morning Heinrich. Thank you. That will be cool for you to come back to SA. Let me know when you are here (hopefully) and that braai is on.
Cheers Grant

Good morning. Planking on Port side continuing. I decided to do the entire port side as this will be the non display side. Learn from my mistakes. Many blunders were made:

Planking:

Tree nailing the hull….o_O: Used wood filler on Sapele. It is a little light in pics but once second layer of poly is on it looks pretty good….if my test samples remain the same!

I first applied a thin layer of Matt poly. This is to stop the wood filler seeping into the wood grain. Dry, then lightly sand with 1000 grit. This does scratch the poly but will not be noticeable once the second coat is applied.

Blunders:
Red arrow :
I made the treenails perpendicular to the waleSick. These should follow the frame lines (well bulkheads in my case). I can’t change these now but to be honest I don’t even notice it.
Blue arrow: if you going to treenail your hull make sure the butt joints are in line …..ROTF

It is fun giving this Cazador a rev or two. The jury is still out on my approach to this build…..and yes Paul (@dockattner ) she will be sexy. ;).
Cheers Grant

Grant, she looks great!
Apart from the "blunders" (yeah right), I think your trennels in the lower part of the hull are spot on, they are there, but not obtrusively so.

Enjoy!
Johan

PS I'll refrain from making any comment on the "sexy" bit, too many associations... ;)

I like the result Grant. Very neat planking job and the small errors or mistakes will not be noticable when turned around.
great job!
Good morning Peter
Thank you. The errors are tiny, luckily. So far I’m pretty happy how she is going.
Grant,
I think you’re being a little hard on yourself. The planking looks very good IMHO
Good morning Ron. Thank you. True story but I think all of us are our own worst critics. It’s part of the model shipbuilder’s manual ;)
The tree nails look great and thanks for all the heads-up warnings on their placement.
You are most welcome Daniel;). The more I do the less I notice this. Whew…ROTF
I know you're not a fan of the sapele but I think it looks fantastic. Sexy in a mature, dressed up way ROTF.
Good morning Paul. I’m working it. I will have to changed my intended colour for the railing support (which will be added later) as a result of the Sapele colour. It will have to be more subtle so my Sexy is going more matureROTF. More like :

Grant, coming along nicely!
Very impressive
Thank you Paul and Greg.

Cheers Grant

I have only owned American muscle cars.
The Ferrari 250 GTO was very limited, about 36 cars... and they go for around $40 million. I WILL NEVER OWN ONE! But they are nice to look at! ROTF
Esthetically those are brilliant cars, but at my age, I won't get in and if I get in, I won't get out of it anymore, so aside the $40 million deficit, I won't own one either...
