Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good morning:

Blunder: While fettling I was cleaning and sizing the main and Mizzen mast deck holes. The masts didn’t fit.Redface. Short story when building the frame I switch the masts support bases - the Mizzen is at the main mast etc. A total clown moment ROTF. Result- main mast doesn’t fit and Mizzen wobbles all over the place.

….n Boer maak n plan…as we say in SA. Basically means we improvise to solve a problem. Project for another time.
Cheers Grant
Hi Grant. Knowing you I think it won't be a even a little problem

Hi Grant,

The best tips are allready provided to you. Reduce the diameter of the main mast at the bottom. (this was a common practice in the day on the real ship)
For the Mizzen, try to glue some layers of veneer strips to the sides of the support bases. You've got this!
Don't get the fit to tight, leave some of the wiggling so you can correct the allignment of all the masts later during the rigging part of the build.

Good morning. Fettling continues but got bored so made the main hatch, pumps and main mast assembly.

Main hatch- I have run out of deck planks so restored some redo planks. A little dirtier than rest but ok. Framed the hatches with 1mm walnut and included Grants fake treenails.

For the The pump and mast assembly I cut some lime leftovers to 2mm. The whole assembly is framed with African walnut.

Grants Xebec creation. I noticed the Cazador has no place for cannon balls nor a stove chimney. The crew can’t survive on cold meats and cucumber sandwiches ;). So I made some:

Everything DRY FITTED.

Looks fantastic Grant, I particularly like your periscope , where do you store the torpedoes ? Seriously you are doing such a brilliant job I expect that your next build will be totally from scratch. Chapeau .

Cheers JJ..
Good morning Jack. I thought I needed a periscope to go with the Heli deck ROTF. I’m not sure it will stay here though as there is not much room on this deck and may be a “bridge too far”. Having fun playing tho.Cheers Grant

Looks great! I like it a lot Grant. ;)
Dear Grant
the deck looks marvelous :)Thumbsup
Owned it!
I love the contrast of the African walnut with the deck planking! Awesome!!
I simply love your smokestack and cowling Grant. Your skills overfloweth...
Nailed it!
Now that seemed to be a little bit of nothing, didn't it! ;) ... Beautiful work my friend!
Yup Thumbsup, looks great.

Jan
Thank you kindly Gentlemen. Cheers Grant

Good morning. Ships bell and bilge pumps. Occre modified.

I scratch built the base of the pumps using a dowel and planked with left over Victory deck planks. I also shortened them by 2mm. The levers are Occre.

The ships bell top piece was modified with needle files and the bell painted antique brass. I scraped some patterns in the walnut on all four sides. I also added the 2x2 cross piece.

Dry fitted with prestick so excuse alignment:
I will leave this for a while to see if it is what I want before finishing and fitting them. Yes the periscope is there as well…ROTF

Man the polyurethane takes forever to dry in winter with the cold and wet environment. Even the ships bell paint is not 100% dry yet. 3 hours later. The gloss on the assembly which I made on Friday eventually will dry Matt - it’s still tacky. We need some sunshine down hereRedface. It’s been a hectic winter.
Cheers Grant
