HMS Royal Caroline kit ZHL 1/30

G'day Maarten
What else can I say that hasn't been said before. I love the idea of the books. Why don't you make up a bumpy book opened up and place it on the table or something. It would be very interesting.

G'day Maarten
I have to apologize to you. I've done some research on Dirk Hartog and he did do a reasonable job of mapping Australia.

This is very impressive representation of Australia.
I have to wonder what we Ozzies would be like if Holland not England colonized this great country.
Food for thought!
Greg
hello Gregg, maybe we would speak and write the same language now, but we never know:D:D:cool:

While waiting for my veneer set I started with the outside carved railing along the top of the ginger bread decorations on the side.
The originals are quite thick 3,5 mm so first I sanded these down to 2 mm on my preshistoric belt sander.

The second step is then to clean out all the compacted dust from the carving cnc milling process which is ver time consuming. I do this by pressing these out from the rear side to open up all those tiny spaces.

On the top the rear sanded and cleaned, the bottom one is the rear side as supplied.

And the front side of both cleaned and uncleaned.
Time to fit them in place. This involves a lot of cutting, sanding and fitting.

Finally one side is fitting, now the other side followed by waxing and polishing and finally fitting.
But first the stern part cutting sanding and fitting.

And the finall result below.

Again the same procedure for the PS side.

I grew up near Chatham and visited one of the forts on the Medway that was built to protect the dockyard at Chatham. A very daring raid, Chatham is quite a distance up river from the Thames Estuary and there are lots of mud flats at low tide. All the extra detail is making your build really special,
Cheers Andy

Still waiting for my veneer so time to do some furniture.

The chair that I already build is now sanded in the correct shape, varnished and covered with blue velvet for the cushions.

The seats are supplied with the kit as you also see in John's blog. Together with these there is a large table and two cabinets included in the set.
The table has a multiplex frame and table top and a veneer cover which is laser engraved.

After shaping and sanding I varnished the multiplex with mahogony coloured varnish.

The table top I painted gold, as the veneer will be added only a small edge of the gold is seen in the finall result.

The veneer is polished with beewax giving it a satin gloss. As seen on johns blog there is also a paper insert for the table top. I will not use it as it is red and not fitting my blue velvet chairs.

The next furniture piece is a cabinet. I made some changes to it like all wood connections at the corners to be at 45deg to make it look more fancy.

The finished cabinet polished again with beewax.

Additionally I added a carved toprol around the cabinet.

For the kit it was meant for the meeting room but as I am building the integrated book cabinets I will place this one in the kings bedroom.

The other furniture for the bedroom I have to make from scratch.

G'day Maarten
Both you and John are at this 'fun and inspirational' stage.
I'm looking forward to be there myself some day.
As least, I've two views to take my inspiration from.
Happymodeling
