I'm finally getting around to starting this so I'm going try my hand at build log. I'm not going to do an unboxing since that's been covered pretty thoroughly in other logs. I'm really looking forward to the build. For starters here's a picture of the result of the first couple of steps.

This is taking a while. Lot's of hurry up and wait in this hobby. The first garboard is attached; currently bending the second.

Taking a break from planking to work on the oars. A little rough but I'm getting the hang of it. I'm looking forward to tapering masts and spars on future builds.

I had a couple of false starts and had to take a break from planking but I'm back on it and the broad strakes are attached. I think things will start going more quickly now.

Argh! Working on bending a sheer strake and I managed to break two frames. I think I can fix it but, dang, this wood is fragile.

Love your care on producing the oars! Looks like the real thing. As far as bending the strake, I suggest soaking them in hot water for a while to make the bending easier. GLuing the broken frames together usually produces an even stronger frame. (Ask me how I know! )

I took a breather, then glued the broken frames (yes, they do seem stronger now ) and got the first sheer strake bent and attached. I had a little bit of an issue with a gap between planks but that was easily fixed with some glue and sawdust.

When I glued on the sheer strake there was a good half inch extra at the stern. I trimmed it off without thinking but now I realize that it doesn't come up far enough and too much of the transom is sticking out above the plank. Annoying, but there isn't much I can do about it so I guess I just move on and write it off as a learning experience.

I believe I did the same thing. I just cut the transom down a bit.

I got both sheer strakes attached. I found it virtually impossible to clamp them properly with the frame on the build board. Also, as Rob suggested, I cut down the transom. Had to remove and reposition the stern cleat. There are a few things I'm not totally happy with but <shrug> it's my first build. On to the next steps.

She looks great! If I may suggest a fw coats of sanding sealer before the painting will result in a much smoother paint application.
