1805 Virginia Swift by AL

I have this same kit but have not started it yet. This is my first model ship kit. I have seen where others recommend the books Rigging Period Ship Models and Rigging Period Fore and Aft Craft by Lennarth Peterssen. Do you know if one or both books would be the most helpful ? The instructions with the kit aren't of much help with this.

If it's of any value to you, I built an older edition of this kit last winter and created a build log of progress here on this site. Perhaps have a look at it, and you'll find answers to many questions you might have as you approach your build. Also, feel free to reach out by PM if you have any questions for me. Always there to assist if I can. Here's the link to my build log:

IMHO, you don't really need any books to take on this kit... but they will make for interesting and informative reading as you tackle more advanced models. I think the Swift was targeted as an introduction to wooden ship kits. I've built it twice. If was my very first build over forty years ago. And though I don't remember much of the details in regards to my first attempts, I have no doubt that this second attempt was executed much better. lol

What you may find interesting is that the rigging instructions have changed over time. Pretty much all the rigging stayed the same with the exception of how they dealt with the stern. I did a hybrid of the three alternatives.

Best wishes for happy time and a successful build as you tackle your Swift.

Thank you But I have completed the Swift and did the group build Bluenose ll.
I will look at your build log with interest is seeing what someone else did with the kit.

I have no idea if the Period Fore and Aft book is useful, but Rigging Period Ship Models is based on a single contemporary model of a frigate, Melampus (38) 1785 and is helpful for a 38 gun frigate of the late 18th century so not appropriate for a pilot boat of the 19th century.

There are drawings/paintings of about 45 NY Pilot boats that I found with a quick search on the internet so you might be able to find at least a little help for Virginia which became a NY pilot boat. They all seemed to vary a little, but the basics look to be close. The following website might lead you to more details for some of the boats listed.

Sorry for the confusion, but my response was directed to @Kimpossible, which was why I included their post comment at the top of my response.

If you need more help on this kit, I believe Bob Hunt of Lauck Street Shipyards has a practicum on this kit available.

His work is very helpful as he shows how to improve the basic kit and how to get rigging completed properly.

Bob is also a member of SoS under @lauckstreet.
