It's comforting to realize I'm not the only one to use that much "mud" on my hulls for filling and shaping. She's really shaping up!

 Rather than give up I got out the Elmer's putty. After hours of applications and standings I got the hull symmetrical and double planked over that. Worked a treat, but nearly half the hull was putty. The trick was (as usual) patience. Many, many coats, allowed to dry thoroughly before sanding. Took a week (or two, or more. But you don't remember the pain).
