Corsair H.M.S. Enterprize Build Log

I'm trying to decide if it would be easier to install the cant frames first, before gluing in the full frames, or to glue the full frames first....
Any suggestions out there? :)
IMHO do not. Do all full frames and then the cants.
I did them first but ended up with lots of sanding to make them flow to the bollards.
Do the bollards/ full frames and you can adjust individual cants to get a nice sweep to the bow. Far easier to avoid unwanted jogs, etc., possible at mid frame curves depending on how the angled bottoms are trimmed to fit keel.
Keep bottom thickness as constant as you can, even if they are thick on the bottom/outside which will all be sanded down a lot to marry up to keel.

Hi Jeff, what does the instruction manual suggest? Sometimes, the steps outlined in the manual play critical roles.
It really doesn't say. They do the construction of the frames, then the construction of the cant frames then the construction of the hawse pieces. Nowhere does it specify to glue to the keel. Although you could consider gluing the components on as you build them.

Thanks TIm! I appreciate your suggestion. :)

Hi Jeff. Have you completed all the frames? I'm not sure that it matters what order you install the frames, but I personally would opt for the installing the full frames first. No reason other than the hawse pieces need to be made up using x8A and I want to do those last. Although with the full frames in position it will cut down on the available space to get your hands in. Sorry, not very helpful

LOL The lack of "available space to get your hands in" is exactly what I'm concerned about. ROTF

Oh, to answer your other question, no, I've not completed all the frames. I started with frame #1 and I'm just starting on 24, 25 and 26. So, I'm getting there. :D I also started building the hawse pieces along with making X8 frames just for something else to do while glue is drying on the frames under construction.

Not a problem.
Once the tricky bottom angles to fit keel are established( go slow)) the frames locate on the stepped keel rather well, the notches up top on the jig work rather well . Once you apply glue you can worm your fingers through the bottom of the jig to insure you have a nice, tight bond.

That depends, Jeff. I'm not familiar with this particular model, but if you need to do any fairing of those cant frames, 'inside' the hull, it's usually much easier to do so 'before' the square frames are added. Those square frames closest to the cants will often get in the way and sometimes even get damaged while trying to fair the cants. I'd personally fair the cants first, then blend the square frames into the cants once the square frames are installed. Much easier and safer that way, usually! ;)
