BALDER, Vlaardingen Herring Lugger from 1912, scratch build scale 1:50 Plate-On-Frame

Lock Size: Here on the Great Lakes it’s the same. Prior to about 1970 the locks at the SOO (the entrance to Lake Superior) would accept vessels up to about 600ft long. Addition of a 1000ft lock chamber made our extremely ugly, 1000 ft vessels possible. This led to scrapping of most of the smaller vessels. A few of these smaller vessels exist to serve ports where the 1000 footers can’t go.

So, it’s here also: size does matter …… but it comes at the expense of the elegance of the ships.:(

I just realized that I started this build-log on August 29th 2023. Celebrating it’s 2nd anniversary!
At the end of the 1st year I was on page 46, post #903 and showing this:

Now it’s page 100, post #1983 and this is where I am now:

A (long) way to go, but still having fun!
Hopefully it is still interesting for you and I will continue with this build and build-log.:)

Dear Peter. I am not going to wax lyrical about your work like I usually do - not because your Balder build isn't worthy of it, but I honestly don't think I can add anything extra of value that has not already been said. So, it's great to see you are well, great to see you are still at it and great to see the fruits of your labour.

Dear Heinrich. Thanks for spending some time to visit my build-log again. And post that very nice comments. I do appreciate that very much.
I read in another log that there is almost no time for you to build on your model. Hopefully there will be some time in the near future.

It’s more than a model, it’s recording maritime history! Having been involved in trying to “save” an old ship, these museum vessels are all on a slippery footing. Some more than others. An accurate model like you are building can be a valuable record in the future.

Thank you for this nice comment, Roger. I can certainly relate to it, as much as I feel honored by it. During my visits to the Balder, when I take my model with me, people have already commented that they actually had no idea about the storage of the barrels in the fish hold. Partly because the Balder now has one large multifunctional room in that space. And an engine room in the place of the aft accommodation. And that's not even taking into account all the concealed structural parts like frames.
So thanks again for this insight.

It’s a pleasure to be part of a community where such projects are shared with such dedication and insight.
