Lock Size: Here on the Great Lakes it’s the same. Prior to about 1970 the locks at the SOO (the entrance to Lake Superior) would accept vessels up to about 600ft long. Addition of a 1000ft lock chamber made our extremely ugly, 1000 ft vessels possible. This led to scrapping of most of the smaller vessels. A few of these smaller vessels exist to serve ports where the 1000 footers can’t go.
