L'Orenoque Mamoli 1:100 scale

Shipmates! I just have a few minutes before the Admiral and I take a visiting prof to dinner :eek: (Don't like leaving Shangri-la at anytine, bit definitely not on Sunday evening when I could be building the main and foretops or ironing shirts for next week.)

BTW this is my first ever three masted ship (so excited!!!) Some pics of the progress:

Holy proportions, Batman ! Thanks to you, i have finally learned the difference between a barque and a barquentine. I would think the fire risk to the main mast was quite high on these ships so the change of rig does not surprise me.

BTW I've been meaning to write about the case you built for Bounty. You should be very, very, very happy with the price. I know you assembled the case yourself, but the materials were amazingly inexpensive. All of my models are in plex cases with plex bases - here's the shocker - The cases cost me almost $400 each:eek:. And I have to drive 4.5 hours, round trip, to pick them upROTF Although I can't say for certain that Billig's HMS Warrior is the next on the stocks, she is here and calling my name - the case will be something like twice the price :eek::eek::eek::eek:Exclamation-Mark

Martin! Too funny! Given the proximity of the main mast to the funnel I'm sure you're right. That's why I added a spark arrestor to the funnel:p. I think there was also a question of better handling with the barquentine rig.

The handling makes sense, the central drivetrain means that the mainmast is relatively off centered to the aft, which will make for a heavy rudder.

is the Warrior that big ?? I make my own cases, 3mm glass, sometimes 4mm mirror at the back, wooden frames. Costs from 40€ to 100€ depending on size and wood choice (unless i go over the top on ebony or somesuch) that's here in europe.
 
The actual Warrior is tied up at the end of the Portsmouth Royal Navy Museum that is close to the platform where the train from London stops. Stepping off the train, she is the first thing that you see. And yes, she’s huge.

The kit at 1:100 has Warrior building out at 5ft long!
 
All hands! I am a madman! I am thinking about a complete re-do on all of the masts! What is the best wood for mast dowels?

I was really thinking to have honey colored wood masts (in my universe the masts are greased with a honey-colored mixture) with black tops. I wound up using a variety of species of wood for the masts and felt I had to stain them all dark walnut to fool the eye into seeing that all of the masts were made of the same wood.

You don't get a prize for the most do-overs Chuck ROTF.

But as long as you are revisiting these vertical spars - to my eye they look too thin. I can't imagine that you somehow got that wrong so, as always, let's begin with the premise that I am most likely wrong. But they just look rather spindly.

Paul! If the prize is a belt buckle I'll get that prize!!!! ROTF. As to your substantive comments :p - I think I got the diameters right. The question is one about my source - the kit. Also, in person they don't look so skinny - perhaps the darkness of the wood is having a thinning effect.

My books, written in English, don't give spar dimensions. The plans, written in French, may give the dimensions, but I can't read French. And what I can read looks to be more about the dimensions of the hull.

More to the point, shipmate, what wood do you use for spars? :)

Well, I'm sort of a snob in that regard. I have been blessed to be able to use tightly grained hardwoods on my previous builds and I won't look back: swiss pear, castello boxwood, Buxus macowanii (boxwood from South Africa) and the like. I have looked at my local home centers for dowel stock and the supply is almost almost bent or irregular in grain.

Where do you get it? I'd prefer round dowels.

The Magellan /Islay plan gives diameters of 70cm so 7mm at your scale. Bowsprit 6.5mm and mizzen 4.5mm .

Martin! Thank you! Yup - Re-do here we come!

If memory serves (I'm on campus and don't have ready access to the plans) kit-plan gives 5mm for fore and main and 4mm for mizzen. Any other dimensional information re: spars on those plans? Where am I looking and what words am I looking for? I think my L'Orenoque plans may have some info :)
