HMS Enterprise 1774 POF 1:48.

Hi Grant
I have been so busy with my own build that I only just now noticed your new endeavour, this looks a great kit and I am deeply jealous as I have thought of building building Enterprise many times but have thought I could never do it justice. You have made a great start and I look forward to following you. Your blogs never disappoint.

All the best JJ..

Loving your build!! It is great to see the shallow notches as opposed to the heavy gouges often seen. I do have a mill, but for these little cuts a good chisel is easier to make the tapered shape as these cuts were not vertical anyway. Just as a point of interest, from the contract, the score at the top of the beam was 1 1/8" and tapered to 3/4" so the carlings which were shaped to match were actually wedged in. When all is said and done, the only thing visible will be the depth at the top of the beams and carlings so for us the taper is not necessary although I find it is actually easier to do.

Good morning
A very boring post: I am plodding along putting the frames together : 50% done of the “square frames”.

When I get bored of frames I cut out some notches on the beams. I don’t have any fancy milling machines etc so it is up to a chisel blade…..1mm deep (supposedly ROTF )

One thing I know is that I am going to be doing so much wood sanding and finishing on this model.
Cheers Grant
Nice fitting joints on the frames and good looking handmade notches, Grant. A lot of pre-work, but when that’s done ……… fun begins.
Regards, Peter

I think you need to play some upbeat music to help you get motivated through this task. lol

You'll turn him into a woodcarver
Good afternoon Smithy. Nope, neverROTF.
Keep dropping hints, Allan. You'll turn him into a woodcarver by the time it's finished.

They look very good to me, very consistent.

You know, it's the plodding parts of this hobby of ours that I find so difficult. Framing, planking, gun rigging and so forth become production engineering - factory work. Assembling the thousand pieces of a plastic tank's tracks is an example from another genre, or rigging the ignition wires on a B-17. How do you plod on while maintaining your usual high standards? I tend to get sloppy, distracted or simply avoid the workbench until all interest in the project drains away.

This is one of those questions that seem to be about modelling but actually concern our full scale lives. I'm struck by your photos of beautifully completed boats in the setting of a beautiful house while my rather scruffy vessels (mostly uncompleted) are perfectly framed by my scruffy little flat. Our models become self-portraits to those who know how to look at them. ROTF (and also a little bit of )
I plod along very slowly. I am unable to continuously do the boring over and over, so I jump around onto something else E.g. the notches. I also have the rigging of the Bounty which I do when frames become “no more”…..Cheers Grant

Good afternoon Jack. It is so cool to have you check out my build. Thank you very much for your encouragement. This project is in its infancy so let’s hold thumbs I do this kit justice. Cheers Grant

Good afternoon Allan.Thank you very much for this. At this scale I don’t have the skill with the blade to achieve that tapered notch. This won’t be visible so I am just attempting to make the notches so the carlings fit in neatly. There are a gazzilion to go so let’s hope I get a fair success rate. Cheers Grant

Thats a nice set of stacked frames. I have never worked with cherry wood; it looks like it cleans up very well.
Just fantastic to work with, nice colour and easy to work with due to the fine grain and hardness.
Hi Daniel. Thank you. Besides char removal and a very light sanding I have not done enough to make an informed comment. I like the colour and smell ROTF so far. Stephan clearly knows and I like what he says:D:D. Cheers Grant
