La Renommee 1/48th Scale

Very clean work, a really good decision not to open the hull. As you said, it would ruin the beautiful lines. That's also why I didn't do it with La Palme. Regarding the angled pairs of planks, I think the decision is perfectly understandable; if I ever build it, it will be in 1:36 scale.

Chris,

Good to see an update on your superb build!!! As usual, you are several steps ahead of my Salamandre and I will continue to glean tips and techniques from your great log. Your accuracy, clean cuts and planking are an inspiration to us all.

The treenails on the planking are executed perfectly!!! What size wire and material did you decide on?

Good call foregoing the notches...wouldn't it be nice if it were full size and you could swing a hammer and chisel them with no worries!!

Do you plan on putting bolts on the keelson? I'm close to laying the keelson and have been working on bolts. I plan on 2/frame and will leave them slightly proud of the surface vice flush, like treenails.

Thanks for sharing your awesome build in such detail and with great photos.

Thanks guys - Brad I bought some brass half hard square wire 4mm off amazon. It doesn't look much different than the nickel wire I used on the frames so no need to blacken it - just let nature take its course. I also bought a good pair of miniature bent nose needle plies with the serrated jaws for grip which made the job much easier to insert the wire.

I just mounted the horizontal planks which will act as the ceiling to the diagonal planks. Realizing nice tight angular joints will be tricky enough to accomplish without the notches. The 2 D plans make the job look much smaller than it actually is.

I'll be using 20 gauge wire like I did on BHR for the keel bolts. 0.8mm/.032in which equates to just over a 1.5inch bolt head. I saw Uwe use some square nails and liked the effect but for such a small boat as the Salamandre, 20ga should look appropriate.

I'm glad I don't have to deal with diagonal planks. Those angles will be changing slightly with every plank!!! I'm sure you'll find a rhythm and some unique ways to make them. Good luck, we'll all be waiting to see how you nail them!!!

Good morning group - update time. The diagonal planks are installed but not nailed yet. I will revisit this when I proceed with interior construction.

I will now remove the model from the jig and fair the exterior. I will soon now if my hard work over the past year is successful.

Simply WOW! You nailed those complicated and ever-changing angles. It really looks beautiful

Will be fun to have it out of the jig as you start to fair the outer curves!
