ENDURANCE (Occre kit)

Hi all !!

Since my last posting, I finished the 2nd planking. For that, i used the 2x5 mm left from the 1st planking, instead of the dark brown planks provided in the kit. I will explain why later. With the thickness sander I reduced its thickness to 0.5 mm.

Then, with planks that I have from previous kits, I did the "Ironwood" (Greenheart Wood) planking that reinforced the hull to brake ice. Again, they all where 2x5 mm and I reduced its thickness to 1x5 mm

I still need to do the other side and add the metal protection to the stem.

These images and the cartoon show the hull reinforcement

I have not seen any ENDURANCE kit model built with this hull details.

I decided to use the same wood, Just in case, to avoid issues later with the paint. Now you have the "why".

Next posting will be with both sides fully planked.... if I succeed :-)

Cheers

Daniel

Ps:

Endurance (1912) was a 43.9-meter barquentine designed for ice navigation, featuring an extremely robust, thick wooden hull, with sides ranging from 18 to 30 inches thick and a 52-inch thick bow for breaking ice. Built of oak and Norwegian fir, she featured doubled frames for strength, yet her weakness in resisting lateral compressive ice pressure resulted in her eventual destruction and sinking.

Key Hull Structure Details:

Keel and Stem: The keel comprised four stacked solid oak pieces, totaling 85 inches (2.2m) in thickness. The bow was specially designed for ramming ice, built of exceptionally thick timber to withstand direct impacts.

Planking and Framing: The outer hull was sheathed in greenheart, an exceptionally durable, heavy, and dense wood designed to resist ice abrasion. The framing used double the normal amount of timber, with double-thickness frames to provide immense structural rigidity.

I forgot to add a picture of the second planking. I drew the BH and waterline to use for measurements for my "Greenheart" Wood planking

Guys, thank you for the likes and comments. As promised, here are images of the other hull side "Greenwood reinforcement planking" finished. Still I need to sand more and probably some putting here and there, but very small additions. I would like that the paint show the planks. I am not looking for a perfect polished hull.

It's great to see this planking curiosity on the model, Daniel. Well done!

Thank you Paul !!

When I got the kit and decided to built it after the Bonhomme Richard cross section I started to read as much as I could and search build logs, and there are plenty. Immediately I realized that no one tried to built the "reinforcement hull planking".

I wasn't too excited to built another Endurance kit at all. But it was a present from one of our sons. The fact that this hull reinforcement built was not done, on any of the models I was able to find online, was the spark that fired my interest on this model : "Let's make something that wasn't done before on this very standard kit".

Thanks again Paul for stopping by.

Best !!! Daniel

Here I am again, with more crazy modifications :-)

In the meantime I am waiting a more adequate propeller, that i hope I have correctly selected, I started to modify the rudder.

Link to the propeller.

I noticed that the Endurance rudder was protected with metal plates. The kit only request to glue the ruder as it comes, no hinges, nothing. I added fake hinges and fake metal plates to my rudder to better simulate the original Endurance rudder.

For the fake hinges I used this :

For the fake metal plates i used copper foil tape that i ordered from Amazon a few years back to do the copper hull plates of my Bounty.

This was the original rudder image I found online from Getty Images:

The same image improved by AI by my friend Mike.

Now my "similar rudder" ... :-) :-) Both sides images.

The keel and rudder are not yet glued to the ship. Just kept in place with tape. I am waiting the propeller to see how it fits and modify the area.
Also, I have modified the hull where the propeller goes. Instead of rounded I cut the hull as the original Endurance

Kit propeller section below as it comes in the kit (Rounded). Compared with my modification you can see on the previous image. (Squared). This section was also modified by several modelers. It isn't a first timer :-). The hull reinforcement and the modified rudder is something i have not been able to find in another Endurance build log.
