1/30 HMS Royal Caroline Build

Dear Rick. This has been a lot of catch up with and to familiarize myself with - you have made excellent progress since my last visit. I have always said that this will be one of the very best RC's out there and that it certainly is. Now my chair is pulled up once more and this time I will try my utmost to stay put!
Thank you for the kind words

Hello everyone,
I finally got some time to post some pictures of the progress of the Head work. There is a lot of room for improvement on the Head than what the kit offers. I decided to build up the Head by installing Head Timbers, Gratings & a solid Block at the rear of the peak point of the Head Rails. The kit plans show nothing of the Head other than basic views. The AOS Plans & the Greenwich Draughts show a little more in details but are still lacking greatly. The AOS drawings are only a educated guess and a lot of details are missing as well. I decided, based on research of 6th Rates & Sloops of this time period to build up the Head in the matter the photos show. This is a GLARING downfall of the manufacture of the kit not having any detailed plans to help the builder get accurate spacing measurements of the Head Timbers. I will be doing the 2 Seat of Eases next and the step downs to the seats before moving on to finishing the Figure head and paint touch ups.......

Dear Rick. This is case of game, set and match! This build is one of those that are surpassed by almost nothing and equaled by very few. I don't know why it is, but this ship and kit always seem to be built by the very best builders, who push the envelope so far beyond my reach that I can simply gawk and admire!

Hello everyone. Just a quick post showing the two Seats of eases under construction. They are not permanently installed yet and just placed for the photos. These ended up being a time consuming step of the build due to fact of having to deal with 3 major angles at the Bow to get the Seat Enclosures to sit at the correct height and Level. I will be installing the Seats drainage openings next and then the Final shaping/Sanding & then painting/sealing..............................................

Hi Rick,

Wonderfull work on the beakhead, love the addition of the grating and will copy it to my RC. Seems to be a logical addition when working on the bow sprit.
The seats of ease I am not sure about yet, but sure they had to be somewhere.

Hello Maarten,
Based on my research and references to model ships of this time period, the Royal Caroline most likely had 1 or 2 Seats of Ease that would have most likely been located to one side or the other of the centerline tucked against the Beakhead. On the RC, it makes the most sense to have the Seats next to the Top Head Rail for the simplicity of having them out of the way & in a conspicuous location, since the RC would, at times, have female passengers. Being the RC wasn't the size of larger Rated ships & having a smaller Bow section, there wouldn't had been enough room or structural strength to have the Seats placed out on the Grating(see pic of 1st Rate seats).

Very good work on the seats of ease !!!!
Will you install also some outlet pipes?
BTW: Do not forget to paint the inside and the floor inside the seats somehow black - in moment we can see, looking from the top, the blue wall and also the floor planking

Hi Rick,

Wonderfull work, but do have you considered to cut the front side of the figurehead to give her a proper face, this would greatly uplift your beautiful model.

I attempted to clean up her face. The gold paint covers up a lot of the facial features. I would be more concerned if I wasn't painting the figure head. Calling it good due to my limited carving skills and my old age geezer eyes.

As fore use of ease .... I think the VIP's, male and female would have had their own 'privacy' arrangements within their cabin.
