1669 Soleil Royal - ZHL [COMPLETED BUILD]

Just a question…could you dye or color the stays black or dark brown? Before I bought black lines for the rest of my Constitution, the admiral colored the stays I had already attached with a black marker. Still looks good so far. I even have tried using shoe polish.

Hi Vic
That could indeed be an option and I'll definitely give it a try.
Anyway, the thick gold ropes provided by ZHL are not top quality and they tend to shred. So replacing them could be a wise option anyway.

God I just can't wait to get my kit and get started Gilbert Just a wonderful job She is a Beauty!!!

Thanks Bandido
Looking forward to seeing your build log
In addition to mine, there are 3 logs you can look at:
- vfordyce who is currently building Soleil Royal
- Paulb and BigMike who both have completed their model a few months ago

I'll be back in France in about 2 weeks and will resume my build

Hello all
After almost 3 months in the US visiting my kids, I am now back in France and have restarted work on the Soleil Royal.
During my extensive break. I spent quite a bit of time reading the SOS log files and reading several ship model books. As a consequence, I have decided that once back home, I'll make several changes:
- Throw away the stay ropes provided by ZHL and replace them with nicer brown ropes.
- Replace the few blocks I had started to install with block from Drydocks that are indeed much nicer.
- Serve several of the stays using a Domanoff serving machine that I just bought
- Change standing rigging and have mouse installed
- Change the cannons on the upper decks and replace them with more realistic ones (I doubt that those provided in the kit by ZHL correspond to the reality since they are more culverines (couleuvrines in French) that were in existence in the 16th century but were not use in the late 17th which corresponds to the SOleil Royal). Note that I have not yet started that step.

The last thing I want to mention is that I discovered a great tool for seizing: "Tie Fast". Seizing is super easy and efficient with such tool. Below a picture (videos available on Youtube),

Below some pictures of where I stand in my "re-work". Quite a lot of work but definitely worth it :)

Good to see you back at it, Gilbert!

Wow Gilbert… I had been following your build as I also am building this. I had to abruptly stop the build (temporarily) back in late summer due to deciding to move.
The move was supposed to only take about 2 months but due to ineptness of realtors and lawyers, it stretched into a 6 month ordeal.
Am happy to say, I am finally situated and just finished the modeling room and looking forward into getting back to the ship.
I didn’t even have internet for the last few months so couldn’t follow you or the other guys.
Just noticed that, as far as you, I didn’t miss too much due to your family visit.
Happy to see your back.

Grant, Paul, Vic, et al
Thanks for your feedback
I love it being back on Soleil Royal

Grant, tomorrow I'll be less active on Soleil Royal, I'm sure you'll understand: France is playing Scotland in the 6 nations. One has to manage priorities, right ? ;)
