17th Century Battle Station

Hi guys!!! We are pretty much done with design and prototypes. Doc is hard at work milling the various woods we need for the project and Don is beginning to turn the 9 brass cannon we need. Once Doc ships me the wood billets I will begin laser and CNC cutting the 500+ parts we need for the 3 models. In the meantime, all three of us are also working on other projects (of course.. LOL). :)
 
The wood milling is nearing completion. I hope to be done by the weekend. The hull frames and deck framing are cherry. The inboard bulwark planking is Swiss pear and the deck planking is hard maple. The hatch grates are boxwood with the coamings made of rosewood. Outboard planking is boxwood, pear and ebony. I think it will look good,
 
Received 22 pounds of perfectly milled hardwood from Dave!! Time for the fun to begin. Will probably begin with CNC cutting the cherry frames. Will provide a few update posts as we go along with parts fabrication. Will be producing 624 wooden parts for the 3 models plus the brass cannon and other metal work Don will be doing!!

When I see this milled timber - I am getting jealous - looks great
 
Our plan was to make all three models we'll build identical. We did provide some latitude for each individual builder to "customize" some parts to their preference. For instance, we can choose to make the wreath out of orange osage, boxwood or yellowheart. The sheer trim can be either the double bead or triple bead variety Mike posted earlier. The great wale can be the original boxwood or swiss pear. So while the models will be similar....maybe not identical!

Mike: The gunwale, lower wale, black strake, channel wales, great wale and I believe the shear strakes are all milled to final dimensions. Check that for me!
 
Turning of the cannons has started. I have one of each size completed and will wait for the carriages before I do the remainder, to be sure they fit. I also received the brass to make trunion straps, hinges etc.

Today we got the set of carriages off in the mail to Don. Also finished 3 complete sets of CNC cut frame parts C, D, F, and G. They are cut out of 3/4" cherry billets using a 1/8" generic 2-flute endmill running 14,000 rpm. Each billet of parts took 5 min 10 seconds to cut out. Nice and clean with very small tabs. Just what the doctor ordered.. (no pun intended.. lol). It's also nice to measure 3/4" wood and see the gauge read 0.7500" :)
