I practiced using epoxy and fiberglass on some scrap wood. I tried both the dry method where you lay the glass directly on the wood and the wet method where you wet the wood first with epoxy. It seems like the wet method works better for me. The wet is on the left. The dry left what appears to be bubbles

I used equal parts of Zpoxy resin and hardener along with some denatured alcohol to thin it down.

This is as far down as I’m going to plank. The pencil mark is at 4 cm, which is the watermark line.

I think I prefer double planking. You can hide a lot of stuff with putty and the second planks.

So now I’m wondering how well ca glue bonds on epoxy finishes. I’m considering using HO scale rails instead of making my own with pins and string like the directions call for. Maybe I can glue them on. It might look better and last longer.

I do not know for sure, but I suspect not. If lights were mounted, they were for utility, not rescue or combat operations, and would probably be mounted on the bridge wings and bow.

That would be navigation lights, I suppose. No search lights for “man overboard“?

They had high intensity signal lights mounted on the bridge so they most likely had search lights too.

I have the same plane (except it’s black). Very handy, but always have to be very mindful of the grain since it will dig in and gouge the would in the blink of an eye.

Very true. I’ve had that encounter before.

I used my scroll saw and drum sander to make this block of wood into the stern section. This is just the rough cut. More sanding ahead.
