They’ll get there—eventually.I can see what is wrong: they should be inside the ship...
They would be ensconced at the little indentations I placed in the boards. I tried putting them in one, but you could hardly see them, and what you could see wasn’t very good.Vic, this may have been addressed in an earlier post, but would the hatch covers have had lifting rings, and if so, do you plan to add those? Would be awfully small at that scale, I guess.
Carefully paint them on to make the impression that they are there. The contrast of the rings should be subtle. They would be ensconced at the little indentations I placed in the boards. I tried putting them in one, but you could hardly see them, and what you could see wasn’t very good.
They appear to be strips of steel screwed or nailed over the indentations. A hook will probably be inserted into the indentations and hook onto the strips. They aren’t technically rings based on the pictures I’ve seen.Carefully paint them on to make the impression that they are there. The contrast of the rings should be subtle.

I was wondering about that. I don’t think I’ll go back and change it now. Thanks for the info. You have equipped this model with Liberty ship style hatch covers. By the time that Liberty ships were built wooden hatch covers were becoming obsolete but were used because of the notion that in the event of a sinking that they would float and be used as lifesaving devices.
These are the hatch covers that were once sold for making coffee tables. They have two hemispheric depressions cut into them at diagonally opposite corners with a metal bar across the top of each for handling.
The ship that you’re modeling would have been fitted with steel “pontoon” type covers.
