Armed Virginia Sloop (Model Shipways) 1:48 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Cut some new waterways. Kit comes with walnut. I'm going to use Swiss Pear. Planning on using some light colored wood, Alaskan Cedar, Boxwood or maybe Holly for the decks. And Swiss Pear for the hull. Believe I'll single plank the hull with Pear rather than the double planked Basswood and Walnut that comes with the kit.

I haven't single planked before and will try spiling the planks.

Installed basswood between the bulkhead extensions as they are so fragile that they easily break. I saw this on other builders builds.

The instructions say that it's optional to line the gun ports with walnut as thats what hull and bulwarks are lined with. Since I'm planning on using Swiss Pear I went ahead and cut some strips and formed the gun ports with the pear.

What a lovely build you have going here! I will be along for the ride!

Thank you Heinrich and everyone who's watching. It's really slow going for me now. My current problem is try to make the oar ports look good. I keep doing a bad job of cutting them. Then I end up removing the planking on both sides - hull and bulwark and try to cut again.

I'm hoping I have a solution. I've ordered a set to jewelry files (I hope the are tiny) which will arrive today. I'm thinking these files will make it easier to cut the holes and make them look uniform.

Because I was bored.... ROTF There were two ports which were cut bigger than they should have been. I didn't replace the planks on these. I decided to try to fill them in to see if that would work. They came out okay.

I made some wood power by sanding the same wood I'm using on the hull.
IMG_3237.JPG

I packed the power in the holes then doused it with thin CA..
IMG_3240.JPG

Then I used the wood powder and PVA to level off the holes.

Nothing great but it worked well enough for me. Here's the larger holes I filled then recut.

Good morning. Oh boy, those oar ports certainly created some consternation. Great job on the redo’s and determination to get these right. Respect. Cheers Grant
