BALDER, Vlaardingen Herring Lugger from 1912, scratch build scale 1:50 Plate-On-Frame

Tomorrow another visit to the real Balder. Measuring some things and taking pictures.
Also a meeting with the editors of 'De Spil', the magazine that is published 3 times a year by the Friends of Museum Vlaardingen. They want to write an article about my build of the model of the Balder.
My model is coming along so that the volunteers who work on the Balder every week can also take a see how far I am now. It is very much appreciated there that I make the complete construction and also leave that visible on the starboard half. They had already seen the forecastle. "With real sliding hatches ..... look, also the water pump and the clothesline!" An enthusiastic group.
In this post I mentioned to the interview about the build of my Blader in ‘De Spil’.
This afternoon the chairmen of the foundation came onboard of the real Balder and handed out a few magazines of ‘De Spil” with the interview.
The CityCrane on the frontpage has the nickname ‘De Spil. It’s a reconstruction of the old one and fully operational:

The 2 pages, sorry that it is in Dutch:

It has a nice layout. There will be a new meeting for a next chapter. De editor got a look of my Balder with the painted hull and was very enthousiast.

How wonderful, Peter! I am happy you and your work are getting noticed!
Absolutely agree with Paul, awesome news, Peter! It's great to see you and your work getting the recognition you deserve. Very well done!
Congratulations, Peter! Well deserved and on such a beautiful day to boot! ThumbsupThumbsup :D
A beautifully written piece in "De Spil." Peter. A crowning achievement.
Mooi stukje. Nice piece of writing. It's special.
The article is a wonderful recognition of both the beautiful "engineering and art" you have combined to create a masterpiece!!

Thanks so much for sharing this awesome bulid!
Congratulations, PeterShip-1Thumbs-Up
Really intersting article about you and your model. Gefeliciteerd!
Mostly I prefer a personal reply on a post. But with this bundle of posts:
Paul, Jim, Pete, Herman, Stephan, Brad, Shota and Christian, thanks you very much!
But also a thanks to all the readers and and those who hit the ‘like/love’ button.

When I posted the interview pages, I was hesitant about whether to do so. Attracting personal attention isn't really in my nature. I'm happy to build, and if I can offer other help or contribute to potential solutions, I'm happy. Since this happened to me, so be it. Sick
It's also more or less motivated by the desire to keep the hobby of model building in the spotlight, especially among young people. What will the average age be now? Here on this forum? But there is already a discussion how more attention can be paid.
It also came up yesterday on the Balder. Regarding the 35 volunteers who are currently there. I was almost the youngest...;) They also find it difficult to find new volunteers and crew to sail her.
Anyway, every little bit helps.:)
Regards, Peter

Some historic facts about the StadsKraan 'De Spil' (City Crane):
Previously, it was mainly used for loading and unloading goods onto and from barges.
In 1625, the municipal council of Vlaardingen commissioned the construction of a crane.
In 1654, Vlaardingen was connected to the barge route between Delft and Maassluis. This route allowed fresh fish to be quickly transported to the market in Delft.
In 1815, it was decreed that all barges in Vlaardingen had to depart from the Waal River. By paying a mooring and unloading fee, skippers could use the wooden city crane at the end of the barge route free of charge.
The previous city crane, built in 1994, had to be dismantled in 2013 for safety reasons. The fungus still present in the wood had caused several vital components to rot. For durability, the main structure components are now made of hot-dip galvanized steel and then clad in 6 cm thick wood. This gives the crane a classic exterior and a durable interior.

I found some interesting short videos about the rebuild and relocation of the StadsKraan 'De Spil' (City Crane) in 2020.
In ‘Relocation’ you can see that the Balder has her mooring at the quay next to the crane.

Finally ‘the Wheel’:
Official Opening, also with some nice shots of the Balder:

Perhaps a new project? It’s a very interesting object.

If you were planning to display Balder Vlaardingen in the water as part of a diorama, I’d say that would make perfect sense. But... given how Balder stands so well on her own, the crane could easily be treated as a separate project. Why not? Out of curiosity, will you have enough documentation for the crane if you start a new project? ;)

Indeed Peter. You should have a 'City Crane' model next to your 1912 Herring Lugger. I enjoyed the You Tube's, great presentation thank you.

What a magazine cover can do .......:)

At the beginning of the video ‘Recovery’ you can see that they are working of construction drawings. Because they are close neighbors of the Balder for sure that they will give me a copy of the drawings. Especially when they see that I made the Balder from drawings that were made available to me.
