BALDER, Vlaardingen Herring Lugger from 1912, scratch build scale 1:50 Plate-On-Frame

How fun! I take it you have a sleeping berth on the train?
It’s a day trip with our departure in Chur on 11:05 till 17:07 arrival in Zermatt.
The original departure of the G-E is at St. Moritz at 08:39 with a distance of 291 km,

but we did the track from St. Moritz to Chur in our travel yesterday.

Hey Peter,

what a ship!!! Sensational and your thorough refurbishment is masterly. The assembly is fantastic and I'm really a huge fan of this great ship. Respect for your documentation and your accuracy.

Thank you very much for your efforts and for allowing us to participate in this great construction project.

Best regards

That was a great trip Peter, did the same with my father and brother some years ago and looking at the pictures is bringing back some great memories. A pitty that the Gornergrat was foggy, no Matterhorn .
Always nice that a post brings back old memories, Maarten.
Luckily the day before a arrived in the evening in Zermatt with a clear sky. With the Matterhorn in here full glory:

I was hoping to take some nice pictures at the Riffelsee with a beautiful reflection of her. But as we say when we have to abandon a climb or can't see much: the mountain doesn't go away. There will always be another chance. And we were there in 1979 and 2006, too, with beautiful conditions. I just need to dig out the old negatives...

This ship is like 12 minutes drive from my house.
If i can help you with details photos - let me know.

Thanks for your offer, Jastreb. Maasland is indeed nearby. For me it’s only 45 minutes and with every visit I have some nice conversations with the volunteers of the Balder. Discussing the background details of the components and technical specs. And at home I only have to ask them one question and I'm inundated with information.
Regards, Peter

Picked up the building of the Balder.

On the inside of the bow, the missing reinforcement was made in the port side:

These are the large wooden blocks on the inside of the hull plates.

The block has a curve and a slight twist:

It also has a cover strip that follows the curve of the handrail.

Then it's quite a challenge to make two identical blocks that are mirror images of each other:

Also made both hardwood bollards at the same time.

It follows the line of the hull:

Getting the hang of building again to continue.
