Batavia 1628 (1:72) Kolderstok Build log

So, at the end of the year, one last update for 2025.
A few visible items have been added, which immediately give the ship a different dimension.
First, the backstay.
I followed Kolderstok's drawing, with the difference that the light ropes are aligned slightly differently than in the drawing. In my opinion, the drawing doesn't quite reflect the forces acting on the ropes and blocks.
So, I first loosened everything except for the two lines from the spritmast. These are in accordance with the length shown in the drawing.

After I had the ropes positioned correctly on the stay, I attached them and tensioned everything.
The line goes through the hole in the top block on the stay and from there down to the forward pin rail on the galleon.
(The rope colors are as shown in the Kolderstok drawing.)

Next up were the six shrouds at the futtock staves. According to the drawing, they were supposed to have "double legs."

After the "dry" installation, it was quite a crowded affair up there. (scale 1:72)
So I abandoned that and switched to a single attachment over the futtock stave. Five of the six futtock shrouds are now attached.
The first one is from the mizzen mast.

The loose ropes under the deadeyes of the mainmast.

And another shroud on the foremast.

What else is planned for this year?
Finishing the lower shrouds.
Preparations for installing the 10 side tackles, 5 per side.
One on the mizzen mast, two on the main mast, and two on the foremast.
I'll also consider installing a loading tackle (stay tackle) between the main mast and the foremast.
It seems like a nice addition to the whole setup.

Happy New Year to everyone (watch your precious eyes and fingers!) and a healthy 2026.
Wishing you a happy shipsmodeling year!

Happy New Year @Papatotalos.

I just finished my book about HMS Beagle. Near the end of the book, the Batavia was mentioned as being a wreck off the coast of Western Australia.
I thought that it might be a good future build, so I read a brief history of what happened. What a haunting story. Sad.

You could Google that one. But Erik is right, just a good slide to the new year.
I just did that:
""Eine gooje roetsj Clemens" is a phrase in Limburgish, a regional language spoken in the Limburg regions of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, and it means "A good start/glide into the new year, Clemens". It is a New Year's greeting."
Thumbsup ;)ExplosionBottle

Your English is better then mine. But I speak Limburgish and we have vlaai. More you don't need in life..... :)

A nice progress at the rigging at the end of this year, Clemens. Wish you all the best for a healthy New Year.

Good evening Clemens. Your Batavia is looking stunning. I love your blocks. Best wishes for the new year. Cheers Grant

First update of this year.
For all of you that I did not contact or used in App, "Happy New Year and a healthy 2026".

What will this bring us? I'm hoping for a lot of building fun.
I'll start with a part-week update.
The last futtock shroud rigging on the main mast was due. Number 6 of 6.
This one is also finished.
20260104_001.jpg

That completes the "first floor" with the standing rigging. I think.
Here's an overview photo of the moment.

The next update, part 2 of this week, will be in the next post later today.

Here's part 2 of the weekly update.

Of course, I forgot to mention in the previous post: "Thanks for the likes and comments."

I've started something different just for fun, and it's a bit of a different kind of tinkering.
It's the anchors and their suspension.
This version of the Batavia will have two anchors.
I'm using the parts supplied in the kit and information from Rolf Hoeckel's book.
"Model building of ships in the 16th and 17th centuries" (P.N. van Kampen and son)
Sorry in Dutch. ;)
20260104_003.jpg

My measurements came out to 47mm for the stock and therefore also 47mm from the top of the stock to the bottom of the anchor.
Start with the following parts.
20260104_004.jpg

The metal of the anchor has already been worked and treated once.
More work will be done on it. It looks very neat and tidy this way. ;)
After some cutting, the parts were glued together. Not quite finished yet.
20260104_005.jpg

Yes, well spotted.
The "stock" is on the wrong side. A common mistake for beginners.
So we take it apart again. (Pulled the shaft out of the stock, gave it a quarter turn, and put it back in.)
And this is the result.
20260104_006.jpg

We treated the metal a bit more and also gave the stocks the necessary treatments with sandpaper, knives, and paint.
Then we started on the anchor cable, using a "cable hitch" in the ring. (See page in the book.)
20260104_007.jpg

With final result of the connection.
20260104_008.jpg

Next week, the ties will be attached and the nails placed in the stocks.
And the four required double blocks with hooks will be fitted.
These will go under the cathead beams and the penter beams. (If those are the correct terms.)
20260104_009_uk.jpg

The target for next week is finishing the anchors and their suspension.
And finishing the new shipyard.
After that, all the work and photos will be posted from the new that location.

Have a great week of construction, everyone!

Looks good and impressive finishing touch !

Clemens;
I saw that you had viewed and liked a number of recent photos in my build. So naturally....I stalked you!
And came upon this build. Only 4 pages, starting back in October and look where you are!!!

And the workmanship puts me to shame. Absolutely stunning. Not sure of the kit manufacturer, but if you are using mostly stock parts, it looks like a very fine kit and your work is doing it justice.

Happy New Year
Chris
