I think you nailed it on not just the Buccaneer, but on your feeling of accomplishment. Just about every step I complete, I force myself to stop and take in what I’ve done.

These kits bring so much joy, even if sometimes it’s hidden behind the frustration.

Two full days of deadeyes, shrouds, and lanyards. Tomorrow will be learning a new skill, doing the ratlines.

Welcome any hints and tips from the experienced crew mates since I'm new to this skill.

It will be fun. Just a few rules. Use clove hitches. Keep them parallel. Use thinner thread on ratlines than shrouds. On my first ones I used a piece of paper with ratlines drawn on as a pattern and placed it behind the shroud. I also like to use double knots on the ends. They tend to unravel. Good luck.

A single knot will also work, if you also dab a bit of watered down white PVA glue on the knot with a small paint brush so it will not unravel. As Vic said, the ratlines can be obtrusive if too thick. They were typically between 1/4" and 1/2" in diameter so for your 1:100 build, about 0.003" (1/2mm). This would be something like a Tex 8-25 thread size which is a very fine sewing thread. I know a 1/4" rope sounds small but a 1/4" hemp rope like on the old ships can hold about 540 pounds and 1/2" has a breaking strength of well over 2000 pounds.

After three and a half days of tying shrouds and ratlines, I had to take a break. Especially since I can see that it will be many more days of tying ratlines.



Turned a park bench sitting person into a pirate climbing the ratlines. Below photo normal size and second photo is 3x magnification.



He is still a little rough but I need to let the glue dry before I work on him some more. Yes, their bench is 3.5 mm wide. Found these architectural figures that are 1:100 scale to match the Buccaneer. Think it was about $9 for a hundred of them. Going to change about four more to add to the ship to give some perspective.



Here he is climbing the ratlines. First time I have ever done a modification like this one. I am happy with the result! Hopefully I will be able to paint some details on him and still be happy. If not, he may turn up as only a silhouette.



Also started to paint a 1:48 figure who will help to celebrate once the Buccaneer is done.



So I guess that is enough procrastination, back to the ratlines.

Very nice, keep up the good work! I'm also building my first wooden boat at the moment. It's the Athena. It's the OcCre model and is called Black Swan. It's a lot of work, but I hope the conversion will be worth it. I'll check in on you from time to time.

Haven't updated in a few days because I'm still tying ratlines. Almost finished with the Starboard side and hope to finish all the ratlines by the end of this weekend. I have gotten into a rhythm and now it seems to go a little bit quicker. Didn't think I would ever be tying hundreds of clove hitches with tweezers when I learned that knot as a Boy Scout. Also have spent time searching and studying the Santisima Trinidad so I can be ready to start the cross-section as soon as I finish the Buccaneer.
