Build Log: ENDURANCE by OcCre [COMPLETED BUILD]

After watching a vet show on TV and seeing them cauterize a blood vessel during surgery I thought it might work for rope to keeping it from unwinding. Did some research on Google and found a thread zapping tool made just for that purpose. At $12 I couldn't go wrong and Amazon delivered it the next day. Works great so no more unraveling. Problem solved!

Oh man I'm ordering right now. Thanks for the tip, Charlie.

That is a great tip Charlie - thank you for sharing that. And the ratlines look A1 as usual.! Thumbsup

I found another major discrepancy in the way things are rigged. All the lines from the sails and yards go to eyebolts on the deck at the foot of the mast. No way this would have worked. You could never raise or lower the sails. If I had thought about it when I was building the masts I could have mounted some cleats around the mast or a made a pin rail of some sort. To late to reach the mast with a drill to install cleats so will have to live with it. Maybe put a bunch of rope coils around the mast to hose the eyebolts. Another other ideas?

Hi Charlie,
I have followed you build with great interest
you are doing a remarkable job

if you Google “Shackleton museum” you can see a replica of the endurance on a bigger scale it might give you ideas.

best regards,

gerry

Thanks Gerry. Very interesting. I've got two books on Shackelton I use while building the Endurance but most are general shots so not easy to find info on anything specific.

Well the problem is mostly solved. Would have liked to remove the eyebolts but that would leave holes in the deck. So think I'll run the lines through the eyebolts then to the appropriate pin. I'll hang some rope hanks to complete the look.

In order to get the pin rail on the mast I made two rails, drilled the holes, then split each one in half at a 90deg. Glued one set to the mast then the other set to cover the split on the first. Gave a nice strong rail. Now the Mizzen is next. The Main will be a big problem. The base of the mast is buried under the deckhouse.

I'm about to start on the yards and sails. The directions never mention sewing bolt ropes on the sails and think that would have been the case. There isn't a good enough photo in the book of sails to determine if they had bolt ropes. Anyone have an option on adding them to the build?

Hi Charlie - I have no idea; can you not have a squizz at a completed build maybe?

After reading the sails section of Anderson's "The rigging of ships" he states all sails had bolt ropes so I'll give it a try. I would probably skip it if the sails were furled but mine will be mostly unfurled so they will be visible. It's going to be a long winter. Thanks for the comment.

I agree with the long winter. I am a summer man and this South African finds the Northern Hemisphere's winters way too cold.

Show us the puppy! I am a sucker for all things animal! :)
