CAF Models La Salamandre...1:48 My Attempt

Thanks everyone for the likes and showing interest in my build on Salamandre. I will try to get you all caught up to where the build is as of today. After completing the keel I worked on frame 45. This sandwich method to make a cant frame was hard to visualize. Trying to to get the 10-11 degree angle was more eyeballing than measuring. I used the Boudriot plans which show a 4mm space between frame 44 & 45 to get the angle as ADC did. This worked out ok but I had a gap between the wing transom. The rest of the fashion pieces were fit into place and the filler blocks in the dead wood were shaped.

Beveling the frames took quite a bit of time but this method is working well. I put all the frames in the jig loosely to see how they all line up with the notches in the keel, everything looked good. My plan now is to fit the aft frames a few at a time install them and fair them then do the same for the fore frames. This will give me good access to the inside of the hull for fairing working to midship were there is little to no bevel. We will see how this works out so far so good. I think the haws pieces will be done off the jig.

Well that’s where we stand as of now, final fitting will be slow but I hope it works out ok. Live and learn.

Hi BigMike, great work And great to see another build of this fine ship. I have had again to take a break from mine due to health issues and hope to resume soon. I was worried that there might have been problems with fit and shape of hull when putting this stage together but everything went well and it looks perfect now. The hull popped out of the cradle like a new born baby With no nast surprises. As I recall one of the ribs did not fit quite right but sanding fixed the problem.

Sorry to hear your not feeling well, hope you get well soon. Glad to hear this stage turned out so well. I have been impressed so far with the accuracy of the laser cutting. The jig works great. Your build log has been a great help, thanks.

Amazing project.

I am learning from you by following your log. I do have the Druid from ZHL waiting till I finish other projects and get the courage and knowledge to built it. Your thread and others about POF models are opening my eyes in so many details that I will have to pay attention.

Thank you for your postings !!

Cheers
Daniel

I had also the same situation with this part and tried to explain it, how I did it

very beautiful job :) Thumbsup

Looking great, very clean and precise. I will follow your build, especially since I have La Salamandre kit and associated books on the shelf !
I'm presently building (very slowly these last few weeks) CAF's 1:48 HMS Enterprise. I like and follow your procedure of cleaning out laser char from each frame before the frame goes into the jig. One thing that I wish I had done in my build is to have pencil marked each frame as they were going on the jig with the location of both internal and external longitudinal timbers (wales, deck beams).

Thanks for posting the link Uwe. I studied this part of your log for hours. Post #244 was the moment it clicked and made some sense. I didn’t even think of taking pictures while working on that frame.

Thanks Daniel. Hope I can help as others have helped me. You have the skills to build it, jump in when your ready and I’m sure your Druid will be amazing.

Thanks for the compliment Alex. I have been following your build of Enterprise and it looks amazing. Enterprise is another fine kit. I will have to check out marking deck beams now, that’s a good idea.
Thanks for the tip.
