Cala Esmeralda 1:58 by Occre [COMPLETED BUILD]

I am currently doing the rigging on Occre Endeavour and the supplied thread are definitely not the best quality. They are quite fluffy in construction so not as good quality as threads on my previous Mantua build. I agree with your approach of taking a breather to think about next steps … I do that quite often when banging my head off a problem. Seasons greetings and happy building in 2023.

Thanks Keith. I agree that the kit supplied thread is junk. I virtually never use any of the kits‘ supplied rope and make my own instead. I’ve been using DNC Cordonnet in various sizes to make my ropes but I was thinking of trying some polyester Gütermann Skala 240 and see how that lays up. I may make a mock up mast to see how it works out. We’ll see…
 
Oliver - Great build and detail. I recently started the same build - hull and decking complete. I certainly will look to your build (photos) for help and may reach out with questions. One was already answered through you photos.

Hi Oliver - I hope all goes well. I assume the CA rain/snow impacted you? And I look forward to your progress. So far your photos have been a great help.

Question: The instructions show 2 notches cut or punched into the davits. I see you put 2 holes in yours. I am certain that day they would not have lines (rope) rubbing or running through wood notches or holes. To makes things worse this peice in my kit is made of plywood. Any thoughts on making more realistic?

Another note: I covered the outside of the "side gunwales" that is a piece of plywood with a lumber strip on to with one wood strip. The plywood is stained and impossible to restain as it wicks into the light wood. Is this going to cause problems later?

Hi CWF, Yes, we are enjoying the snow as we are at about 6800 ft elevation. We have about 4 ft on the ground and another 12-18 inches in progress…
As to your questions: When you say davits, are you speaking of the cat heads near the bow? If so, they will eventually have rope tied to the anchors so that they can be raised for storage. In a real ship the cat heads would have pulleys set into them (photo below). In this scale I normally just drill holes and pass the ropes through as my skills aren’t up to making pulley sheaves this small.

For your other question I’m not sure I understand… Are you asking about the planking on the bulwarks (Step 39) or the gunwale cap rail (walnut strip in steps 51-53, #59)?

Thanks for the explanation. Over the weekend I just went ahead and did the photo below. They don't look bad but functionally they are most likely incorrect. I really hate the plywood parts! I'd like to install a veneer on the top of these because of the plywood "look". I'm starting on the furniture and that will be interesting as I don't like the planned finishing/trim. And the house with the buckets calls for a pin head as a door with no door trim? I like your buckets (do you have extra? - kidding). I have the figure a more realistic looking bucket.

Thanks and keep warm and safe! I lived in the CO Mountains for a number of years at about 9K feet and we had a 6' snow storm - couldn't leave the house for almost a week. Luckily I had a generator. Now on Lake MI where it "lake effect" snow.

Well done on the cat head pulleys. If the plywood really bothers you, you could make new ones from a piece of walnut.
 
Oliver - Hope all is well. Question: the wheelhouse shows no mechanical way that it is connected to the rudder. It looks good, but was thinking it should shoe some way it is mechanically connected. Any thoughts or am I being to particular?
 
Also, how the heck do you get the treenailing of the deck planking to look so good? Whenever I do it it looks like a bunch of freckles all over the deck. Do you have some sort of secret, trick or tip?

Good Afternoon.
i didn’t use the supplied stand offs so my “gearbox” is lower to the deck and you can’t see under it. Even on the real schooner you really can’t see anything From a distance. If you get right on top of the wheel house you do see the pulleys and ropes. What you choose to do is really up to you.

I took a break from Esmeralda to work on Le Rochefort framing. But got stalled waiting for some milling bits to arrive so I‘ve been working on the Esmeralda’s rigging. Without a doubt OcCre’s rigging diagrams are lacking. So I’ve been relying on pictures of the Santa Eulalia (the basis for this OcCre model) and Petersson’s book “Rigging Period Fore-and-Aft Craft” but it’s been slow going as I interpret the pictures and drawings. Anyway, I’ve made some executive decisions on how best to complete the standing rigging. For the purists and knowledgable riggers please forgive my errors. I’m learning as I go and have taken the opportunity to try different methods on this model. think of it as a sample board of various techniques and approaches.

I’ll be rigging the bowsprit next and then figuring out best way to rig the forestays and backstays. The OcCre plans completely ignore the backstays and have no information on how best to attach the forestays… Oh well, I’m learning lots of new terminology and methods… Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!
 
Oliver - I'm having the same issues but I don't believe I have the experience and patience you have. Looks great!! And I completely agree with your take on the rigging instructions that are confusing as well as lacking in minor detail. I look forward to see your progress.
