Cazador Xebec 1750 - OcCre - scale 1:60 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Great work on the cannons and swivel guns, Peter while your hull is looking very authentic!

Thank you Heinrich. The swivel guns are so small, it was a pain in the "behind" to bore out the guns. I like the overal "authentic" character as well. Maybe if I do it over I wouldn't go for the black wales....

Hello everyone,

In between the rigging of the cannons, I did some "ironwork" needed for a few things on my to-do-list.
I began with the anchors. The once provided within the kit didn't look to bad and they were already blackened. After inspection I decided to change them a little bit and blued them with Super Gun blue.

I also made an anchor for the "little boat"....

i made a few eyebolds and rings which I used for the oar port lids..

All the gunport lids are placed included with the ironwork....

I made two of four knees which I placed to reinforce the catheads . Two down, two to go....I'll remove the cleats above the knees and give these another place.

As last I worked on the swivel guns. They are made out of zamac and are cast. I bored out the barrels, cleaned them up and blued them with Super Gun Blue.
I dry-fitted these on the quarterdeck, so they are not glued down yet.

That's it for now,

Until the next one, happy modeling.

Good morning Peter....OH boy too good! My Cazador is on its way to SA. While I have your brilliant log to help me on my way, I know I cannot replicate your skill. I think I will have to build it in secret now ;). E.g. how you managed to build that anchor for your ship boat, so small and perfect is beyond me. A quick question- what is super gun glue? Cheers Grant

Hi Grant, your Cazador will be a beauty in its own right I'm sure. Great to hear your Cazador is shipped and waiting to be delivered at your doorstep. I'm looking forward towards your log, but finish your HMS Victory first. It's always tempting to start with a new project, but most of the time the old one suffers and is being declined. Your Victory deserves a beautiful place into your home. Well I've ordered a small anchor that comes from Artesania Latina https://artesanialatina.net/en/anch...279-anchor-4-ends-27x25-mm-8421426087116.html. I thought building one out of brass, but I have found one that fits the bill so to say.

Dear Ptèr
your work on swivel guns and the anchors is amazing, the ship looks beautiful :)

Thank you Shota, really appreciate it! :) Thumbsup

Fine job on the metal bluing Peter, I wonder if that process works better than brass black? For me Brass Black is very messy and tends to come off.
Hi Daniël,

I think the products of Birchwood Casey works pretty good however there are some "rules". Brass Black and Super Gun Blue are both cold bluing products but for different metals.
So I use Brass Black for brass and copper products and Super Gun Blue for non brass metals like pewter, zamac (the white metal parts) etc.
The issue with coming off especially with brass is the coating or grease residue that's on the brass. Also wires have a very smooth surface so the bluing doesn't stick very well. So there are two things I mostly do and that is to use a very good cleaner or degreaser. Second it helps to sand the parts before bluing. Just fine sandpaper or for small parts make a sandtumbler. Modelexpo also sells a sandtumbler but you can easy make your own from an old can or round container and some sandpaper. For parts I make from brass wire I use sandpaper to really scratch the wire threat before I make parts like eyebolts or rings. Then use the cleaner, rinse well in cold water and then into the brass black. Just 1,5minutes to two minutes max. Get it out and again rinse good in cold water. Use a towel to dry and another cloth or brush to "polish" the parts. The result should be much better.

Of course it's a bluing process so the top layer can be fragile and is easily scratched when use metal pliers etc.

Pter, great improvement on your anchors!

I've "blued" a few firearms over the course of my life. In all cases the process is a chemical reaction with steel. Are you using a special product? I was not aware bluing would work with any casted metals. As I'm sure you know bluing's first function is protection of the metal against corrosion, which is not a concern with casted white metal or tin based alloys.

My curious mind needs to know. ;) :D

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Ken

Hi Ken, I use Super Blue from Birchwood Casey for non brass metals. This works great on various alloys including zamac, pewter, white metal mostly found in kits. I've use their products for many years now and do love the stuff. However, it's an expensive product outside the USA.

Good morning Peter. Thanks. Yes I will shelve my Cazador until the Victory is complete. The Cazador will take its time to get through SA clearance and customs so may be a while before I receive it. Cheers Grant

Hi Peter,

Just wonderfull work as discussed today.
Your carvings really pop out when you see them in reality. The carvings on the friezes is just amazing, love it.
Hi Maarten, It was a real pleasure meeting and to have a chat with you. Your models are all pieces of art really and it's almost impossible to see all the lovely details you put into them. I really enjoyed seeing such high craftmanship in real life! Thanks for showing your interest in my work and I'll keep following your progress! Thumbs-Up

Yes for sure, building a kit with a touch of yourself makes it special, and this is veŕy special

Nice meeting you Stephan and great work on the ropework on your Prince Willem. Thank you very much! :)

Hi Peter, you also a big Thanxs for meeting each other’s and see your Cazador in real life. The most impressive were the carving skills you showed on the model. :) Also here: the photos don’t show half of the 3D impression.
Regards, Peter

Hi Peter, it was an absolute pleasure meeting you. The details on your Blue Nose and your Robert E. Lee were astonishing. Really impressive work and you are a true craftsman, no I mean artist!
