Cazador Xebec 1750 - OcCre - scale 1:60 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good afternoon Peter. Nope the credit and accolades are most certainly due. I have started my deck( will post now) and I have changed the kit up completely. Made it longer, more sleek and I have some ideas to make it more outlandish. I am doing the lower deck like the Le requin( well sort of) and I don’t think she will be a Spanish ship when I’m done. I most certainly don’t have your skills but I’m going to give it a goThumbsup. ChyGrant
Those are some serious tasks in front of you. Can't wait to see it but the plans sounds promising. You will manage I'll know it! Thumbs-Up

Hello friends,
Time to show some progress on my Xebec. There is another great buildlog opened by Grant. In case you missed it, it's here: https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/...60-using-jabeque-cazador-occre1-60-kit.11242/
Not only the building progress is great, there is also beer and crisps being served.... All the best on your Cazador build Grant!

I made some carvings, build the second steps / stairs, prepwork on the masts and finished my first anchor (3 more to go)
I hope you like it, and thanks for the likes, support, comments and cheers from you guys! :)

All I can do is just marvel at your work, especially your carvings Peter.

Great job Peter, I noticed you borrowed from the Le Requin Xebec to style your decorations, even on the ships boat. ;) Not a bad example to follow!
Le Requin still is a big inspiration for my build indeed! You've got a keen eye! :)
I do kept most of the Cazador design as well, it has become a sort of a hybrid....

I echo Dean. This is a particularly beautiful build and those rear bulwark decorations are to die for. Great job, Peter!
Thanks Heinrich, you always seem to leave such kind comments.

All I can do is just marvel at your work, especially your carvings Peter.

Thank you Daniel, love your comments over the past time. Some of the carvings didn't worked out as planned however still made it on the ship. ;)

Good afternoon Peter. Those carvings are incredible. I can only admire this. I see most guys who have built this Cazador kit have changed it in some way or another- the Le Requin decorations look so much better. Your ability with the blade and chisel is awesome.

Good morning Peter. I was examining your Cazador closely last night. Besides your beautiful woodwork, carvings and replacing most of the kit wood with walnut, there are so many other detailed changes you have made to the kit. This is a work of art Peter. You deserve every accolade you have been given. Cheers Grant

Yes…Pter bashed this boat beyond believable boundaries! ;)
You’re setting the bar on the carvings! ;)

A small update from last weekend work. Made a replacement block to accept some rigging on the stem of the bow. I made a disk out of walnut and is inserted between the block and stem to let the rope run smoothly.
It will be part of the bowsprit running rigging.
After this I formed the bowsprit. Is has a nice round ball at the end and is handmade out of walnut. The bowsprit is made out of a single piece of wood tapered to the end. Tapering is done by hand using sandpaper on a block of wood.
I've blackened the wood with East Indian Ink and used some Danish Oil as a finish. I like to work with Ink over paint. 1) can't paint properly...main reason... o_O 2) paint lies on the wood and seals the grain while Ink is absorbed into the wood and grain remains visible and open to accept oil. It gives a more natural finish thus has my preference.
In the end the bowsprit is placed onto the ships stem and secured with hand made dark brown rope from Ropes of Scale. Pretty pleasing to work with high quality rope.

If there are any questions or suggestions, please let me know! :)

Chapter x? - Masts

Hi Guys,

A small update of my work of last weekend. I had to figure out how I wanted to fabricate and construct the top parts of the masts. The kit provides me with plywood out of scale parts that didn't made it on the ship, so I decided to make new ones. There are a few ways to make these and the easiest way is to laminate wooden strips together and leave gaps on the place where the slots needs to be. I didn't do it this way, don't ask me why but I tried the hard way. A solid piece of walnut and milled 1mm slots into the wood with my Proxxon drill. In the end it worked but sometimes I just don't understand myself. ROTF

The disks are 1mm thick and has a 5mm diameter. I use one of my files to make the slot into the disks, dryfitted and painted them dark grey (yes I used paint)
For those who know me a little bit, I can't paint....Sealed the disks with a semi gloss varnish.

The tops and bottoms of the masts are blackened with East Indian Ink. I truely love this stuff. It's really black and has no pigment in it. Made purely out of charcoal I believe.
The Ink is very thin and flows like a dye, so you get "bleed outs" very easily if you want a sharp line. Tape doesn't help here. To avoid this I make a small cut into the wood with a hobby knife. The cut, as small as it is, prevents bleed outs.

I still need to oil the wood as a finish, but that's for later....

regards,
Peter

I’m a little confused Peter. First of all, great work as usual! ;) But the kit provided nice brass pulleys for the masts, why make them out of wood? Also, why worry about a sharp line with the ink, if the entire mast head is black? Maybe I’m missing something? And finally if the kit provided mast heads were out of scale, why not resize them if they need to be smaller? The type wood does not matter if it is going to be black… confused!

'I didn't have brass pulleys in my kit. The pulleys in my version are cast metal, not bad at all but off scale, so it doesn't fit the slots I've made into the heads of the masts.
The sharp line is refering to the transition between the ink and the natural wood of the masts. Hope that clears things a bit. :)
Don't worry, it's not you but my explanation in English is just a mess....Speechless
