Cazador Xebec - OcCre 1:60 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Finished one cannon carriage.
Stained it, painted cannon, painted around wheels, added dots of glue with straight pin for nail heads and painted when they dried. Added eyelets to side. That’s all the detail I want to do at this scale!
Thanks to those who encouraged me to do this, I probably would have settled for making the casting look as good as possible. But we always regret settling don’t we?

From my references to carriages for the various guns, and visually, I think that the side pieces of the unstained carriage are a bit too thick but not proportionally as narrow as those of the stained smaller carriage, this is assuming a 32 pounder. Carronades firing up to 40 pound balls would have the thicker carriage for the more massive recoil but those are probably not on this ship and when carried typically were very few due to their weight; also demanding a larger gun crew if we accept the guideline of 500 pounds per crewman using their crows to position/align the sighting. From what I have read, a 32 pounder would have a guncrew at the carriage around five per side and most six.
Anyway, your skill and eye for proportion to the ship will dictate how you compete that armament. Nice work as always. RIch (PT-2_
Thanks for your input Rich. To be honest, I got lazy and didn’t want to sand that much off because I stacked the boards to make the sides. I like the look of the thicker side, but you and Mr Deep are telling me they should be more narrow...sigh! So I suppose I can take the wheels off and sand the sides down narrower and re-stain it and put the wheels back on.
I was also wondering if I should paint them black or red? Too many decisions and unknowns...

Not enough for me it seems. proceed from the size of the trunnion but it's better. If you think it's OK, leave it like this.

Well it’s a lot thinner than before. But I didn’t want to get much narrower than this. Maybe on the next ones. This one is the learning curve! I will hide this one under the upper deck...lol
I also decided to make the wheels black.

Normally I would never add advice on such a great model that you have going here, but I agree with @Mr.Deep the sides should be thinner(the same width as the brass cap squares). Also, test it on the boat to see how it sits in relation to the gun port. Typically the front trucks were larger than the rear ones to allow for the camber in the deck, otherwise the barrels may be pointing down.
Awesome build so far!! Thumbsup

Thank you! The front wheels are larger. It’s probably hard to tell in the pics. If you look at one of my pics of assembly, you can see where I traced them on a board with a circle template, and it’s obvious from that pic they are different sizes.
I did put the cannon assembly in the ship and it’s perfect! The cannon can sit level through the port. The castings were too low and the cannon had to angle upwards. That was another reason I decided to build carriages.

Here you go, Dean! Eyes are scared, but hands are doing!!! Very good! Personally, I would swap the barrels and use the one on the right side...but this is my personal taste, thought.
Same barrels, one on right is raw casting. The one on left is painted black and dry brushed with bronze.

On my monitor, the color matches more towards copper than bronze. But it could be the monitor. The same color has seen on monitors differently. But for my tastes metallic would be the barrel color.

Carriage colors changed with the preference of whomever was in command of the ship. Most were painted and we see red and yellow very often. Ship models have a natural or stained finish most times because it matches their other materials and not in interest of accuracy. My own preference is a darker red but we see yellow on the present day HMS Victory. It is all in your hands and brushes. Rich (PT-2)

Thank you Rich. I saw the red carriages on the USS Constitution (real ship, not model) and it looked good. But I wasn't sure how common that was.
I prefer paint over stain on the carriages for two reasons. First, because there is already so much natural wood on the ship (deck and bulwarks), that it would make them stand out more and not get lost. Secondly, because the fumes on stain are not pleasant (or healthy), unlike water based paints.

I personally like your decision to paint the carriages which besides historical accuracy provides the color contrast that you mention. This will be exciting to see the fully armed ship with those at their stations. Rich (PT-2)

I opted for the command choice of red (my ship), and yet again repainted this cannon assembly. I have a few areas of touch up. But this will give you an idea of what I’m going with. I used artistic license and left the brass bits gold instead of painting black.
