Many thanks for sharing the positive feedback to this book "Historic Ship Models" by Wolfram zu Mondfeld. I think the book is a translation of the german book "Historische Schiffsmodelle" which I have and also like very much.

Mike and Don used the book to settle on the final design for the gun port lids on our 16th Century Battle Station.
Back to the Gun Ports:
No, no, I’ve not given up and turned the hull into kindling. The first gun port cut out was a “OMG” moment. By the second and third cut out I was not as worried. I’m now at the point of sanding and squaring the cut outs on the Starboard side. I think the Port side will be a lot easier as my confidence builds.

This book has really a lot of good information, and not only for beginners! I've got it and use it quite often. It shamelessly uses information (text, picture, everything) without giving credit to the original source - but this behaviour is unfortunately not uncommon these days. But I still love zu Mondfeld ))):-

While having my early morning coffee it occurred to me I should share this.
My 1799 Constructo Enterprise was a Birthday present in March of 2017.
Never having built a wooden ship model I was ill prepared. I didn’t have a “boatyard area”, none of the “tools” required or a method of storing what I would be working on. But I did and still have a lot of enthusiasm.
Over the past year I’ve managed to accumulate what I call “ boat building stuff”. My meager collection of tools is not on par with what I’ve seen and read about here on the Forum, but it’s helped me to get my build to where it is to date.

All fourteen gun ports are now cut in. A little more sanding is required but I’m satisfied with the result. I made some sanding sticks from 3/8 X 3/8 in Birch (about 9.5 X 9.5 mm). The dimensions of the gun ports scale out at 10 X 10 mm. I found I could use a Scotch purple glue stick to attach a sanding strip to the sanding stick.
The glue is sticky enough to let me replace the sanding strip when required.

You are doing a great job. It doesn't matter how many tools or equipment you have or don't have, you have loads of enthusiasm and you are enjoying what you are doing that's the most important thing.

Oops, I do have Xacto blades and handles. Hmm I’ll have investigate Proxxon tools. I’m not familiar with them.
This is maybe an idea for the next future.....to show several Proxxon, dremel etc. electric tools and to show or explain, for which parts or works the members are using them.......we will not forget...

In my opinion either modification looks better than having the interior of the gun port framed.
