french 64-gunner LE FLEURON in scale 1:48 by Joachim

The two wooden reliefs to the left and right of the balcony windows have three levels: ornament in the middle, frame and background. First I drew the ornaments on the piece of wood. I mill off the remaining area 1 mm to get the level of the frame. I use carving knives on the Ornaments themselves, I can't go too close to the ornament with the milling machine. Then I draw the frame and mill another 1 mm deeper between the frame and the ornament. With the carving knife I work on the subtleties again.

I wish everyone „Happy Easter„
The shipyard was open in the last few days and the final decoration on the transom on the left and right of the lantern is being tackled. This is a kind of curved vessel filled with fruit and flowers. In the first step, I sawed out the piece. Then it needs to be adjusted so that it fits in front of and on top of the mirror. As far as possible, I mill off material with the machine, it works quickly with solid wood and the recess is even. Then comes the carving, here I work a lot with the right carving tools to carve out the flowers and the fruits. Both ornaments are not quite finished after three days, a final fine-tuning is still to be done (again about half a day).

Thank you, yes I get faster. Now I take a look at the thing I want to build and I get faster an idea how to do it and in the meanwhile I learned more skills
Amazing what new skills you learn as you expand your ship building skills.

Your carving work with combination of machine and hand carving has come a long way.

The two pyramid-shaped decorations are now carved and are positioned on the left and right side of the transom. Only the lamp is still missing in the middle. But first I go on working on the decorations of the side pockets. In the meantime I bought a Tormek wet grinder for my carving knives with accessories to clamp the chisels. Finally i get really sharp tools again. The knives go through the boxwood as if through butter, that's really fun now and, above all, I can work faster. Before that I had a dry grinder for sharpening. Great flying sparks, but I couldn't grind at the right angle with it. I didn't get any really sharp chisels , rather I even sharpened them incorrectly.

I continue with the decorations on the rear. A little tip for photographers: I now always put a white sheet of paper near the ship. Then the camera manages the white balance better and the colors look quite real.
