GORCH FOCK by Mantua

I'm pretty sure I saw that kit on FB Marketplace too. Would have gotten it, but I already have more models than I can finish in a lifetime (I'm almost 82). I would have converted it to the USCGC "Eagle", which would be a simple matter since they are sister ships. "Eagle" started out as the "Horst Wessel". I have the Constructo "Eagle", but the one you are building looks like a better kit. I'll be watching your progress.
I think I was able to get this kit for 100$ and that was with shipping included from Facebook market place. Granted I think this was about a year ago when I got it. It's been on the shelf for a little bit lol.

I have also found this one that I'm looking at and it's not very far from my house. But the lady's father has fallen I'll and she has been taking care of him. Still been waiting on if she would accept my offer. Screenshot_20220910-164838_Facebook.jpgScreenshot_20220910-164843_Facebook.jpg

That depends solely on the state of construction you want to build/show the ship in. As far as I know, there have been various other changes that I unfortunately haven't followed that closely.

Right. I'm thinking I'll do the green and white

I thought this ship looked like the Eagle, but didn't look anything up. Good to know.

No, sorry... The first GF was built in 1933, the sister ships were Horst Wessel and A.L.Schlageter. H. Wessel went to the USA as reparations. With the G.F. of today they have nothing to do. The current GF was launched in 1958.

Got the main deck finished and sanded down and ended up throwing some Danish oil on it. It makes the seams really pop since on this one I didnt put caulking lines. Got the cabin built that goes under the over hang at the bow of the gorch fock. I had to put some bracing on the inside because it was way too flimsy. It is place and glued and I'll pull the rubber bands off when I'm able to get back to it. Thinking I might put some 2x2 at the bottom of the perimeter of the cabin to help close that small gap.20220911_174255.jpg20220911_174307.jpg20220911_174311.jpg20220911_192912.jpg20220911_192917.jpg20220911_193029.jpg20220911_193055.jpg

I was referring to the 1930's Gorch Foch. Between 1962 and 1976 I sailed on USCGC Eagle for 9 summers. Four as a Cadet at the US Coast Guard Academy and five as a Watch Officer while assigned as a Navigation Instructor at The CG Academy. The last time I saw the Gorch Fock was at the Windjammer Parade held in Kiel in 1972 in connection with the infamous 1972 Olympics. My point was that if I had that kit, I would have converted it to the USCGC "Eagle"

Good morning
Finaly finished the decking. Took 11 packs of 1.5mm x 3mm x 24in basswood planks. Might throw a coat of polyurethane on before I call it quits tonight.View attachment 329908View attachment 329909View attachment 329910View attachment 329911View attachment 329912View attachment 329913View attachment 329914
Derek. Lovely progress so far- as always. I enjoy the deck as is. I don’t know if you plan to treenail it but I think at this scale it would be to much? Cheers Grant

Yeah at this scale it would be almost impossible but looking at some of the pics of the gorch fock you dont really see treenails in the decking.

These 2 cabins took me about 4.5 hrs to complete. The one on the main deck is secured in place and the one on the stern deck is just dry fitted. I can already tell that the railings will be the death of me on this ship. ....something has to “be the death of us” on each model we build Derek....railings on the Gorch Fock and ratlines on my Victory ;) .

Starting a new kit the gorch fock by mantua. Doing an unboxing of this kit, definitely seems of better quality than the lynx. Big sheet of photoetched parts. This will be the biggest ship I have done so far. 3 sheet of plans that are printed front and back. Already started to dry fit the bulkheads to the frame.
