GORCH FOCK by Mantua

Well today I was able to sand one side of the hull. Got her roughed out with some 120 grit. I'll sand the other side tomorrow and then hit her with some some putty then come back with some 220 grit.

Decided that I would work on some of the deck furniture while I was inbetween sanding. Got the winch for the anchors built and dry fitted on the deck. And got the helm done too. 20221017_123056.jpg20221017_123106.jpg20221017_123114.jpg20221017_222224.jpg20221017_222229.jpg20221017_222235.jpg20221017_225124.jpg20221017_225128.jpg

Good morning Derek. Excellent. This is a good looking ship and thus far you are owning it. Cheers Grant

Got the other side sanded today and letting the filler dry over night so I can start smoothing everything out getting ready for the 2nd layer of planks.

While the filler is drying I decided to start on some of the deck furniture. Got all the vents and exhaust stacks done along with the crane that goes at the bow for the anchors. And the last building that goes at the stern section. 20221019_002257.jpg20221019_002310.jpg20221018_165310.jpg20221018_165325.jpg20221018_165342.jpg20221018_165349.jpg20221019_001957.jpg20221019_002002.jpg20221019_002008.jpg

Well got all the filler sanded smooth and I started to look at the second layer of planks and after inspecting them I didnt care for them at all. I don't have very much left over from previous builds to put matching second planks so I opted to forgo the second layer and just do this model as a single layer planking. I proceeded to putty all the nail holes that I had put in to hold the planking down as it the glue was drying.

And of course I couldnt just sit idly while the filler was getting a full cure on it. So I started working on the masts that I have previously cut to length. Now they are tapered to what the plans called for. Still have the second height of the foremast and mainmast to taper. 20221019_145133.jpg20221019_145143.jpg20221019_145148.jpg20221019_160542.jpg20221019_223752.jpg20221019_223801.jpg20221019_223804.jpg20221019_223809.jpg20221020_000158.jpg20221019_223817.jpg20221020_000255.jpg20221020_000301.jpg

Well the ole girl has paint on her. You can see taping off the waterline. Took 2 coats of the VALLEJO flat green paint. The outside shots are before I put 2 coats of the white on and it looks like it will take another coat maybe 2 coats.

Got the launches built and the davits made. Still have to round the edges of the lower part of the davits. And dry fitted the propeller and rudder.

Over the past few morning after getting off work I managed to get the launches and the dingy painted.
The kit supplied stickers as covers went going to cut it so I had some ole sail cloth laying around and decided to put it to good use. I used the stickers as templates for the general shape of them then used the same paint as I used for the bottom of the ship and painted the cloth.
Also managed to get the water line more defined with the black line separating between the white and green. Definitely looks much better. 20221025_234317.jpg20221025_234326.jpg20221026_003000.jpg20221025_234416.jpg20221025_234423.jpg20221025_234516.jpg
