GORCH FOCK by Mantua

Got a new toy to work with my ships in today. The lexivon butane soldering iron. This bad boy is the ticket. Just waiting for my aluminum soldering paste to come in. So I used the solder that came with the kit to practice on making my own turn buckles the model kit came with photoetched flat ones and I just think that ones that are round and show dimension would be better. I have 47 more short ones to make and 47 more long ones to make. Also got the 3 launch covers painted up and I'll install them tomorrow once the paint is dry. 20221026_210924.jpg20221026_211958.jpg20221026_230223.jpg20221026_234507.jpg

I am looking forward to see your new toy, the butane soldering iron, working.
I am very interested to see the way and the results...

So far the 2 that I made have turned out more than expected. Still is taking some time to get used to, being as I'm very new to the soldering world but I'm following olha instructions.

The biggest secret to good soldering is said in a simple phrase, which I learned the hard way.

Clean the joint, then clean the joint and before soldering clean the joint!

Finger print oils, and residue from the manufacture and shipping on what looks like a clean item will cause poor joint work.

Alcohol wipes, tissue and wire brushes work great to clean brass and light metals we solder for hobbies.

I have a jar with rubbing alcohol in it that I'm soaking everything in. But practice practice practice

Hi, to clean the parts to be welded, I have always used Muriatic Acid
plus a piece of Zinc or Aluminum inside a container, after blending it is ready to use, experience made.
This is good to know, the metal inside for chemical reaction to clean?

For my other hobby of model railroading I hand solder track and turnouts with rail and printed circuit board ties with a good brushing and use of flux to help get good clean joints.

Are those made from eyes inserted into hollow tube, if so, a simple design to complete, even though a bit tedious.
Yes sir I made some eyelets with pliers I have for that. Then cut the tubing to 9mm in length then solder the eyelets in the hollow part of the tubing. I'm using the 3/32 round brass tubing from k&s precision metals that I got off of Amazon 16668966293364189100151929241694.jpg16668966409708859277604925467952.jpg

Finally got all 96 turn buckles soldered up even had enough to make one extra so I have 97 in total. Now I have to polish all of them. Put se black paint on to top edge where some portholes will go on the sides. And decides to dress up the launches some with some nails to act as buttons to hold the covers on.20221101_011220.jpg20221101_015805.jpg20221101_015812.jpg

Very nice! I have been watching some reruns of the 1970's BBC series the Onedin Line which opens with the Gork Foch under sail to the playing of Spartacus by Khachaturian - very evocative! I will certainly follow your build log as it is a model that I hope to do at some point in the future.
