Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good morning Grant, it's good to hear that Heinrich is doing well.

About your work, as usual it looks fantastic I hope my rigging will only be half as good, it's totally new territory for me.
Good afternoon Tobias. He has been rather quiet but it’s good to know his promotion went through and he is all good. Thanks for the compliment re my rigging. Cheers Grant

Hi, Grant, just unboxed my kit, & I agree, those god-awful kak gun carriages! I can live with the barrels, but no-way the carriages. Mine have OVAL wheels! I will be complaining to OcCre.
You have green shaded thread, mine is a 'goldy-yellow', but I make my own in any case. A couple of pics of the 'egg wheels'.

Good morning Stuart. Ah yes those horrid cannons and other parts….I have used very few of the Occre casted parts. The cannon carriages are the worst by miles….. I also replaced all the blocks and ropes as these are not to scale and the green rope …..well…..In saying that there are some beautiful Cazadors on SOS where guys have built it from the kit. Cheers Grant

Good afternoon. I finally got some time to continue with the foremast stays and anchors.

My stays are tied off to the strake on the fore bulkwark. Being active stays and not shrouds I decided on this vs being tied to the stay by the toggle. The falls I looped and stored them behind this strake.

I did break the fore support….will have to fix.

The Anchors. I made a sling at the cathead to hold the stored anchor, some strapping between the first and second stays.

The are some loose ropes around - I will finish these as we continue.
Cheers Grant

First class modeling Grant!
OMG, that is super work. What great job.

Jan
Good evening Paul and Jan. Having a sundowner braai with my kids etc, before Ashtyn leaves for Canada on secondment with KPMG…wonderful but a little sad…. Anyway thank you for the compliments…appreciate it guys. Cheers Grant

@Stuart Little
Apart from the fact that these wheels are oval, people think that this is a high-quality company product. The truth is that it would be a shame to ruin your model with something like that... it's really worth putting in some effort and making just any wooden gun carriages.

Good evening. Absolutely agreed. For most of the casted parts I would recommend scratch building the parts from wood, especially the cannon carriages. I would view @Ptèr ’s Cazador/Xebec where almost every part has been crafted from walnut. It is an absolute classic. Cheers Grant

Good evening. Tension and tied off the Mizzen mast stays. In same manner as foremast :

And for fun I prepared the barrels and testing some oarlocks for my longboat:

Good afternoon
I am going to build a Xebec. Originally I was going to build the Jabeque Cazador from OcCre 1:60 scale, however as I will show I am going to change this up a little.

The kit :
As with most reasonably affordable kits there is nothing exotic about the Cazador from OcCre.

When my kit arrived the parts box had broken open and plenty tiny parts were strewn all over- I’m sure I did not achieve a 100% recovery- time will tell :D

The wood is mostly lime (L)(not my favorite) which is easily cut and sanded. It is a porous wood and difficult to get a realistic finish. I am going to have to research staining and wood finishing.

Certain parts e.g. the false keel, is African Walnut (Aw) which does not finish as good as the European Walnut however it is cool.

The second planking layer is veneer which looks good and easy to use. It Does limit certain details e.g. caulking and the treenail effect is different.

As with all modern kits in this price range many of the parts and decorations are molded metal where it would be so much better to have these wood. I guess a lot of scratch part building is in my near future. Going be fun.

The cannons are simply kak. (An Afrikaans word - translation obvious ROTF).The blocks and thread (which is a strange shade of green) will be replaced with the good stuff from Drydock. Pretty much stock standard for kits.

Occre got the instructions so good. Clear, concise and there is no confusion. Wow so different from my Mantua Victory ones.

Next up some history, ship research and Grants plans for a Xebec.

Cheers Grant

Bummer that the contents broke out. Occre seem inconsistent on where they provide wooden parts vs metal parts e.g. your oak canon carriages look to be cast in metal whereas the similar scaled Endeavour had wooden carriages so not sure why they do this. Will be interested to see what changes you make, so looking forward to log updates.
